    https://www.charlottefive.com/independent-brewers/

"To become a member of CIBA, according to Goulet, a brewery must brew a majority of their beer in Charlotte or one of the five surrounding counties (Gaston, Lincoln, Iredell, Cabarrus, and Union).

The press release goes on to explain that “large conglomerates and non-local brewers make strong efforts to mimic local. However, buying those products sends money away from the community and doesn’t support local jobs.”

Reeks a wee bit of clannish arrogance. All they have to do is look at the Asheville Brewers Alliance which is much more inclusive and welcoming with membership from Andrews to Blowing Rock including the big 3 in the area, SN, NB, and Oskar Blues, all of which are an integral part of the 'local' beer scene.

Clt breweries should embrace the help they could receive from larger craft breweries. Is this the last ditch effort for breweries like OMB, birdsong, etc to try and stay relevant. Most of the CLT make mediocre beer at best.

This is new and surely they will figure out ways to be inclusive. It's good their are some models of this established for comparison as mentioned.

I am guessing the exclusion of places like Catawba, Victory/Southern Tier/Fat Head is more sour grapes from Olde Meck and the reason for their exclusion. I consider Catawba a full on local brewery now...I don't care if White Zombie on a shelf in Greensboro is brewed in Morganton. They are brewing more beer in CLT than most CLT breweries.

Such a strange article, focusing entirely on the two breweries who aren't in, because, fact, their headquarters aren't here. What's so difficult about that?

Maybe not everyone agrees, but to me, local means the money stays local. When I eat at the McDonalds down the street, I do create local jobs and support the local economy, but I highly doubt anyone would suggest I'm "buying local."

ABV headquarters IS in Charlotte. They just make the beer in PA and NY.

The company I work for has headquarters in Charlotte but product is made in Michigan. Are we not a local (to CLT) company because the blue collar jobs are in MI? We are local to BOTH Charlotte and Grand Rapids.

Because I'm sure they do not need the requirements to join this organization.

Oh I agree, FF can kick most of the Charlotte offerings down the road like a rusty tin can. They can also stand on their own, anywhere. But to exclude them from the "old boys club" because they are up the road a bit is a bit juvenile.

FF is not a member of ABA either, but it's their choice, not that they are excluded.

Fonta Flora would be a bit different though. They don't plan to brew anything in Charlotte, just a taproom.

Catawba's first presence in Asheville was just a tasting room. It's still there, in addition to the brewery they added later.

is Heist in this? NoDa? Didn't catch their names in the list.

Heist and Res Culture are probably the only two worth a flip.

I refuse to acknowledge NoDa after their complete disregard for the condition that Hop, Drop, and Roll is in.

Noticed an ad on TV on the Asheville and upstate SC channels for Charlotte as a beer destination, saying there were 40 breweries in the area.

Last week I talked to the owner of a brewery that has a Charlotte presence, but excluded from the 'clique' as they don't brew 50%+ of their beer in Mecklenburg County. The best description of his response would be to say he chuckled.

I'm sorry. What is the story here? None of this matters.

Charlotte is becoming a natural destination for expansion by NC breweries and others due to its population size. The breweries that previously opened here are protecting their market share. I really don’t see anything wrong with that.

    It’s just business.

The Asheville Brewers Alliance didn't tell Sierra, New Belgium or Oskar Blues they couldn't join. The ABA has let breweries as far away as Boone join. I don't understand why you wouldn't want these breweries involved. It seems to me they would have more to offer in terms of helping with growth, logistics, etc.

Perhaps they're not modeling their group after the ABA. It doesn't have to be one sized fits all.

Curious, how does that protect market share? Doesn't change the quality of the beer, or distribution (though NoDa and Old Meck are suing to get state law changed).
