Looks like a good thing if your a ticker, but the dating of single bottles of hoppy beers is near impossible. Once that six is split any the business loses all control.

He's talking about buying in grocery stores that have a license to sell and serve both food on the premises and for take out (the only grocery stores in PA that can sell beer).

There is a state imposed limit of 192 oz on the amount of beer one can buy for take out in one transaction. So he could easily add a couple of bombers or a 4 pack of something else.

Although that is the limit on a single transaction one can take the first purchase out to the car and then go back in the store and buy upto another 192 oz.

If you buy your beer by the case from some by-the case retailers your only limit is your wallet and what that retailer has in stock.

You can buy 2 and put them in the car and come back in and by 2 more and do this all day long. The WF near me was letting you leave your beer outside the beer shop door and keep buying more. The beer shop is a separate are in the store

    Enjoy

Where I am, we have big chains doing pick six's. (Tops, Price Chopper) If the cost of a craft six pack is $9.99, it's usually authorized to get into the pick six.

With that being said, we're fortunate enough to have some bangers in there like Prima Pils, Smuttynose varieties, Flying Dog varieties, Wachusett, and of course AB high end...

There's a Kroger by me that I frequent and lately I've found some good deals in the mix 6. Great Lakes Christmas Ale and Schlafly pumpkin ale. Nothing spectacular but somewhat boozy tasty seasonals that are usually $12 or so for $10.

I've seen $10 bottles in the build a six just because the store(s) thought customers would want sours (Avery) but never sold. Build a six is great for Octoberfest though -- mmm!!

My gripe is when the store requires you to buy six beers from the “singles” section. I travel quite a bit for work and there are times when I just want to by one or two beers to enjoy back in the hotel room while watching TV.

Where I live there is one store that has almost as many singles as 6 packs — hundreds, so I cannot relate to the OP. My only complaint is that a mixed 6 pack cost $20 so I rarely buy singles.

A newshop here has maybe 8 doors ofmixed six that is fresh and they will also break anything up on request. I've been taking advantage.

Our local Kroger just down the road sometimes has some goodies. The Albertsons around the corner is a lot of outdated crap, kind of a graveyard. Both have prices around $9. Also available is a little gas station down the street that has two coolers offering 80 beers for a mix six for the same price. Found some fresh Habenero Sculpin in the cooler once and bought two sixes filled with just that. Guy at the store thought I was odd getting just one beer in two mixers but that is well below the $13 to $14 that would go for at Total Wine
Also that little gas station has a pretty regular supply of Rouge Siracha Stout bombers for only $3.99!!!

Although you might find a gem or two on occasion, most of the time "Make Your Own Six Pack" should be called "We're trying to get rid of beer that is old or isn't selling well".

Wasn't really a "make your own 6 pack" thing, but I thought about this thread this weekend when I bought 6 bottles of imperial stout for around $20.

    Bell's Black Note
    Great Lakes Blackout Stout
    Magic Hat Heart of Darkness
    Victory Storm King
    New Holland Dragon's Milk
    North Coast Old Rasputin

Now that's equivalent to 3 bombers of imperial stout for $7 each. I think I won. Plus I drank them while I watched Logan, so that was even more of a win.

Bottles & Cans in Chicago has everything available as a single.

Because of that, they see most of my retail dollars in the city.

You can actually by two six packs and a four pack and still be under the 192 oz limit. Two six packs of 16 oz bottles also works. As does two sixers and a couple large format bottles. A lot of times the employees will tell you you're over the limit, but they aren't all that bright and it's the register that will cut you off at the limit, not the employees.

The limit isn't per day, it's per transaction. You can take your first purchase to the car and go right back for a second purchase.

It's still annoying, but maybe not as bad as you thought.

Im so glad that my favorite shop a couple towns over offers ALL of their 4 packs/6 packs in singles, makes it easy to try a few new things and some old favorites.

I used to work for a large liquor store chain. The build-your-owns there were based on price...six packs of 12 oz cans or bottles that were normally priced at 9.99 make it in. We were always told to check the dates and make sure they had several months to go before going bad, and occasionally people audited the racks to make sure. At least in these stores, it’s not based on broken bottles or stuff that’s almost going bad, although we could put in 5 bottles or cans if one of the items from the 6 pack had broken.

The store I regular has 2 voolers for singles. One holds full priced ones (usually a little old) and another holds 1 dollar beers (old for sure). I don't bother with either unless theres some imp stouts in the dollar or 1.50 section. Got some 1.50 palo santo marrons that were delish.

It really depends on the store. some places suck. others do it up.

Why? Because it's where most places put up the old stuff. Just don't buy hoppy stuff, or low abv stuff from there, unless it's seasonal, or has dating.

On the plus side, Wegman's in Johnson City, & Weis in Vestal do put new stuff in the mix-6 racks. The guy at Wegman's told me he tends to do it Friday & Saturday mornings.

The beer store has a mix of worthwhile stuff (most) & old IPAs & APAs. All priced individually.

    Price? Wegman's : $10.99/6 | Weis : $9.99/6 , $2.50/single
