Because craft beer and home brewing makes my drinking look like a fun hobby.

Hey OP. Why you baggin'g on heroin. Just kidding.
I started with what we American's have been calling BMC swill. It's short for Budwieser, Miller, Coors: the 3 largest mass produced beers of recent generations. I, and many of my compatriots, wanted to explore classic brewing styles (which for Americans meand foreign), and we were hoping for more...what's the word...FLAVOR!
And thus began a revolution in the US.

Beer tantalizes the senses, quenches your thirst, makes a good meal a great meal, brings friends together, unwinds you after a long day, and pours smiles on your brain.

I agree. My palate changed with food first then with alcohol. recently (last 5 years) beer is my thing. Like some people are art, wine or coffee connoisseurs

Good to see you have found the "light".

Actually interesting that one of my friends' father also worked for Carlton and he only drinks Crown I think and because of this he only drinks Melbourne Bitter.

Despite this, and to his credit, I do see him buy a Fat Yak but still you wonder what they are missing by not trying more craft.

    1. Taste
    2. Beer culture (the people you meet and share with)
    3. It's history
    4. Effect
4 might come before 3. I am very into the history of beer and brewing but I suppose I could still be into that without drinking

Ahhhhh VB, or Vagina Bitter as sometimes referred to. Went to Crown Lager after that, tasted both last time I went back to Australia... what was I thinking? Tastes like camel piss. Can't wait to try all the Aussie breweries that's popped up since I last visited.

My exact journey. Did you ever think back in the days before homebrewing that only 20, or so, years later we would be one of the best beer nations on earth?

As for OP Question: It is a combination of aroma that is enticing and enjoyable, taste that is all the right buttons of flavor combinations that really can please while the liquid cures our thirst refreshingly.

And a nice buzz that doesn't overpower quickly like spirits, and even wines, can do.

Add to this the long tradition, and importance in creating civilization, that beer has, and its appeal is obvious.
