We all know we could get probably get by with a pint, a snifter, and a tulip and call it a day as far as glassware. What drives you to acquire more?
I'm a habitual collector, just ask my mother and wife. Glasses keep better than the beer that they are designed to hold.
I like to collect old glasses from out of business brewerys and well as any new ones that grab my eye. I'm starting to reach critical mass on my space, so maybe a give away will soon be in order.
I seem to have an accidental collection. I've been to so many beer fests, tastings and so forth, and a big promo is obviously giving out glasses, that I looked around one day and realized I had several boxes worth, ranging from a ton of shaker pints, obviously, to the Duvel artists series, to goblets, snifters, tulips, and other styles. Most of them are living down in my cellar these days, but when I/we finally get a place with actual room for it, I do plan on having them out for display and use.
People that don't collect glass assume there's a misplaced reason others do collect. People that do collect glass wonder why those that don't collect think about it so hard.
I only started my glass collection once I moved to Brussels. Around Christmas all of the beers offer free glasses if you buy their beer. Eventually it led me down the road to having over 60 Belgian glasses and 20+ U.S. glasses.
i voted that i like to wash dishes because at the end of a tasting, the volume of glasses to wash is sometimes quite daunting. the real reason is... too many people collect beer. i'd much rather drink beer and collect glass (also habitual collector)...and at this point, i'm in too deep to stop.
I add to my glassware collection by buying a new glass from certian breweries, restaurants, and/or other places I visit while on vacations.
I was planning on writing about this so it's interesting to hear what others have to say. Personally I'm a habitual collector and like others have said when the beer is gone the glass remains- it's a good way for me to record memories.
