I've been discussing the differences between BeerAdvocate, RateBeer, Untappd, and BrewGene with friends. We can't come to a conclusion on which is better between BA, RB, and UT. We did agree that BrewGene doesn't really make the cut.

I enjoy BeerAdvocate the most and rarely use anything else. The community is second to none, review system is great, and the site is very easy on the eyes. Mobile functionality is a huge factor for most of my friends. I'm also interested in mobile functionality, but BA does not have an official one yet. The friends who don't use BA, started using these apps on their phone and have never looked back. I wish they would reconsider and come back to BA or start using it!

So, why do you use BeerAdvocate?

I find it has the best database of beer and I enjoy the what beer are you drinking threads. Great site to set up trades as well as meet cool BAs.

I always feel discriminated against on RateBeer for not being a "Premium Member." Plus RateBeer seems to rate beers too highly in my opinion.

I've never used BrewGene but I do use the Untapped app to make quick reviews about brews I've had; the reviews I post to Untapped are mainly for me so I can remember what I've had and if I liked it.

I utilized the trading forums the most on BA.

Its a good quick reference when I'm beer shopping if I need it, and the forums are easily my favorite way to kill time at work. Ratebeer always struck me as a little boring, but maybe I haven't given it enough of a chance.

I wouldn't go as far as saying the community is second to none. There's a lot of aholes here too

This was honestly the first beer site that I started using, and the others just haven't matched up to BA. I just like the functionality and easy navigation of the site, and it's my primary source for knowing information on my local and regional breweries.

I also feel that many of the reviewers here actually put some effort into reviewing beers rather than just jotting down some nondescript notes, which is really helpful when I'm looking at trying new beers. (Not that I bank on reviews alone, but they're certainly helpful.)

I hate how everything is set up and displayed on RB. So I guess that's one of the things I like on here

Everything is easy to access and quickly. I like the trading forum, the fun late night threads, all the valuable information as well as a lot of the people on here.

I had RateBeer as well as BA together for a while and settled on BA. I felt Rate was kind of Twitter like in that the forum posts seemed to have less substance. Yeah, we get those here too but there are a lot more useful, informative posts here where people think before they type.

Also feel the database and review system on BA is superior. Good variety, nice home brew forum.

Besides entertainment and info, I think the community is great overall. Someone mentioned assholes. As a veteran of a few on line motorcycle communities and two antique tractor forums, there always are some. This community makes a couple of my former haunts look like Sunday school - discussion for the most part remains relatively civil even when things get heated. Personal attacks seem pretty rare, and I read a lot more threads than I care to admit!

I use BA for the threads, a touch of trading when I feel like it, and then the reviews. I use Untappd to tick my beers, that way I can keep track.

Honestly, I like to form my opinion about beers before I read bad things about them.

Forums here are better than rb. Trading is better here than on rb. I do however find myself using the site less and less now that the trading forum has turned into the cesspool that it is today...

Edit: I use the site now more for informational purposes for what new stuff is breaking on the scene
