I'm gathering some information about why we write beer reviews. If you have anything that you'd like to share, it would be greatly appreciated.

For me, its just the enjoyment. I feel i can understand and savor a beer more if i take time to write/type my feelings on it down.
It enhances the experience for me.
I might add i only review full beers ( 12 oz and up)

Do you find yourself reviewing the same styles for comparison reasons?

Because I think people care about my opinion more than they really do.

Not really I have no preferred style ( except Baltic Porter and those are hard to find)..now and again I will though its just chance that in have two beers to review in the fridge and both are the same style.
Usually it happens to be a German/Czech pils against an American brewed "Czech/German" pils..ypu can guess what wins

I love trying new beers and reviewing them to help expand my palate. That's pretty much how it is for me. I'm nearing 1700. Also taking the time to sit down and slowly analyze a beer is much different than just drinking something for leisure. I love understanding how each and every style is meant to be executed. And as a result, I have a huge appreciation for underrated styles like Kolsch and Helles and etc across the board.

Have to say the advent of cheap portable tablets/netbooks and widespread free wi-fi in brewpubs has made the job very much more enjoyable..even if often the barkeep/owner will come over and see whats going on..usually its a great interactive moment and a conversation is struck up.

Having not fully read all the replies to this post beforehand, I review for the same reason I joined. Reading other people's opinions to square against my own thereafter. As well as actually taking the time to pour, smell, taste, investigate a beer fully as I enjoy it instead of just glug glug onto another.
Give my own experience a sense of purpose perhaps?

but you have only reviewed one beer. just saying. Haters, bring it.

Rate, yes I do. Review? Not as much. I should commit more time/effort to the cause, but it seems that I (and I assume others) only look at the first one or two reviews, so why would we need 1436 different opinions of the mouthfeel and the aroma.... unless there's a way to consolidate the sub-category opinions, and get a conglomerate average, why bother? (I enjoy the reviews.... hypocrite)

I write reviews to know what i did or did not like about a beer. Most of the beers i drink are good but obviously some are better than others. I can't always remember why i liked one beer off the top of my head. It helps to have a written account. Also its fun to see your palate progess overtime.

I don't post reviews on this site. I generally don't really write a REVIEW as seen here at all; I did one as a guest reviewer on a local beer blog.
I personally don't tend to get into the minutia as some people do. Instead of worrying if the beer is a couple hours too old or a couple degrees too warm / cold, I just enjoy it for what it is, at that time. I have sent beers back for various reasons - oxidized, infected, not right in one form or another, but these are few and far between. I don't drain pour beer at home, unlike some people on here, who apparently do so regularly. There have only been a couple times, when something is completely undrinkable.
I did that review for the local blog mostly for fun, but also a bit to get my feet wet in doing them, to really sit and think about what I'm tasting and why I'm tasting it and get it down in written form. I do that generally when I'm tasting a new beer (just ask my fiancée - it drives her to distraction sometimes.) but I don't normally write it down.

I've reviewed every beer I've ever tasted (basically), except Mackinac Pale Ale ... because the Bros. closed reviews for that beer after I had tried it. I do it just because it's a hobby, I guess. It lets me keep track of beers and ratings of them more accurately.

    For money, fame and women!

Seriously, I am fairly obsessive-compulsive and one of my traits is keeping logs of various things I enjoy doing. In the case of beer, I just found a community where my bizarre behavior is common.

as a one-man personal database ... and i feel guilty over it, but BA is too awesome not to take advantage of

I do not review beers based on style as much as I should because in many cases I don't know what the hell I'm talking about in terms of style. When you review a wee heavy while drinking the first wee heavy you've ever drank, how COULD you review to style? You can't. I don't.

I drink the beer, take style into consideration as much as I possibly can then review the beer based on what I like and what I don't like. It's completely unfair to the bible of beer and to hardcore BAs. I know that, and I make a point to point out when and where I have no idea what I'm talking about in my reviews that I have no idea what I'm taling about so that anybody bored enough to read my reviews at the very least understand where I'm coming from.

    Why do this?

Because I can look at my beer profile and see very quickly what I like, what I don't like, how I scored this beer or that beer and which beers I've had. It's a fantastic database.

    1. It helps force me to pay more attention to the beer than I otherwise would, which helps me pick up on nuances I might otherwise overlook.
    2. It's challenging and enjoyable to try to deconstruct a beer by taste and smell, and look for familiar or unique tastes and aromas.
    3. I have a crappy memory, so it serves as a long-term record of what I liked and disliked about each beer I've tried and why.

For fat dough in my pockets.

Ha, no, I just love writing beer reviews, it challenges my palate and definitely sparks thought about what I am drinking. It has turned into a real passion of mine. I take it very seriously, I don't review more than one beer a day and always review with a FRESH palate. I take it so seriously that in part, I actually quit smoking in February so I can taste more accurately. Unfortunately, I have a lousy job so this is a hobby that gets pricey for me, so I am accepting any and all beer donations with a smile!

I enjoy reading reviews and also find it fun to contribute towards something I enjoy from others. Also, writing reviews makes me savor and really enjoy the beer way more than if I were to just drink without trying to unfold its mysteries.
