Why does The Alchemist only brew one beer?

In another thread, someone brought up a good point: all truly great breweries have more than one outstanding beer and brew more than one style.

That brings me to my question - has The Alchemist ever stated why they only brew one beer? They obviously do that one beer/style better than pretty much any other brewery, but are they just a one trick pony?

Do other breweries do this that I'm not aware of? Does this make them just a mediocre brewery in the grand perspective?

The alchemist used to brew a lot more when they had a brewpub, but it flooded and they opened their cannery (in 2011) and had a 2nd beer they made as well (parasol i think) but they don't do that one anymore. They did say they are going to do some small batches of stuff later this year of the other things they used to make when they had their brewpub and can/bottle it.

Wasn't aware, so that answers the initial question. Thanks!

Follow up: have they ever stated if they'll produce other beers other than Heady or is that it from here on out?

I wish they would brew more beers again, but when you're literally selling product faster than you produce it, it's hard to feel obligated to do something different.

I would imagine they'd get extremely bored as brewers there, always producing the same thing day in an day out. I guess they feel as though they need to keep up with demand on their best product...but they seem to have created this problem themselves, by deciding to only focus on one brand. If they cut back production on it now, to focus on other beers, everyone would go batshit I'm sure.

John Kimmich said he was going to start brewing other beers. I think he said something along the lines of one release a month, if I'm remembering correctly. Pretty sure it was the last page in the June BA magazine, if you want to check out the entire interview. Not sure when this starts or if it's official.

Going to be brewing a beer a month to fill growlers with (only their growlers and I think they are going to be the stainless type that cost a pretty penny to purchase). They are looking to cater to the locals in a way that they'll buy the growler and be able to fill it way more often then a mule driving a few hundred miles for their 2 case Heady allotment.

I believe that they do make other beers for events and possibly even for sale. I'm pretty sure they make a gluten-free beer that you can find in some Vermont pubs.
I feel a little like an annoying grandpa here, because I've said this so many times before on other threads, but I really think the one beer cannery thing is kind of genius. I think the model is what allows them to make so much Heady Topper (relative to other world-class DIPA's in the area) and to sell it for such a reasonable price. To me, it's not actually the best DIPA out there, but it's plenty awesome and I love supporting them!

I kind of wish Kern River would only brew Citra, I could probably live with that!!

If your current one and only beer sells out within hours of leaving the canning line every day, would you make different beer?

They sell all they can produce, people love the product, and I would have to assume their price point covers their expenses and hopefully enough to put something back for employees and owners. Where is the problem?

They do not make that beer anymore, they sold the rights to it. As mentioned, they will be doing one beer a month for growlers. This stuff is discussed all the time, there are about a hundred threads on it, so it isn't a secret.

I would love for them to brew enough heady to distribute all over the country, can you imagine being able to get heady on the regular in florida!

There were actually a few of their beers that I would choose over HT if they still brewed them. Eventually we'll see HolyCow in tallboys I think.

From reading their "About Us" page on the brewery website, it sounds as if they built their production brewery/cannery with the intention of only producing and canning Heady Topper though. Just seem like a strange choice to only focus on one beer...even if the best.

absolutely not. I present to you: Orval. Completely fine with that brewery making only 1 beer (with the exception of petite, which is only available at the monastery right?) so maybe my post isnt appropriate anyways

But before the pub flooded, were they going to keep both places? If so then it explains only having heady at the new location while they keep experimenting with other beers in the pub.

True they make 1 beer, but as a Trappist brewer they are only in it for enough money to support themselves.

I can see your point there, if that was indeed their intent. Heady was what was going to pay the bills and keep them operating, but the Brew Pub was where they'd offer their other beers.
