Why doesn't Shorts print their ABV on the bottles?

In Kalamazoo and pretty much homebound during the storm. Here I am drinking--er, sipping--on a Mystery Stout while doing everything I can to fight off cabin fever. I just reviewed it and saw that it's 10.8%! (What did I think, imperial stout was a session beer?) It got me thinking, I can't remember seeing ABV listed on any Shorts beers. How come?

I don't buy beers for the ABV, but if I had a sense as to how strong they were I'd be able to better pace myself.

    Maybe they dislike cluttered labels?

I've wondered this too. I could be blind, though, as is often the case with things that are right in front of me.

    HopHeadHerman, your thoughts?

New Glarus doesn't either. If you don't distribute out of state I don't believe you have to label the abv.

It's up to the state. In Michigan, it's not required. I wouldn't be against it, if we did.

I had that with soft parade. I was slamming them back thinking they were something like ~5% on a hot summer day. So needless to say after the 5th one, i got up to go play pool and had one of those" ohh crap" moments. Asked the bartender and she said it was like 9%. It would have been a good idea to know the abv before then.

That's funny. I came back from Michigan during the holidays with a six pack of that ($8.50!!! Couldn't pass it up!) and assumed the same as you. The taste didn't really keep me drinking multiple bottles but I sure drank the two I had quicker than if I knew it was 9%!

Well, it does say high gravity on the bottle--but i hear ya. Soft Parade's ABV is actually around 7.5%

As mentioned, it's not required in Michigan. If you put it in the bottle, then the government can hold you to it and zing you if you're out of spec.
