Well I have an idea of why. I recently found a 4 pack of 2007 BCBS in my parents basement, just sitting in a cabinet under a sink because my parents only drink Bud. So its been sitting there for 5 years in a basement that probably gets pretty damn cold and extremely hot. Anyways I threw them in the fridge and had one a few days later and I cringed every sip I took. I feel with my taste in beer and the love many of you fine people on here have for BCBS that I should have loved it. The storage conditions probably ruined it correct? Should I try and get some fresh BCBS to really see what the stuffs all about?

I know nothing about aging and storing. I just know I like consuming good beer.

    Thanks

Basements usually equalize temps pretty well, but if yours is that hot/cold, it's likely that did it in. Shame. I've never had it either but am anxious to try it one day just based on the hype. That many people can't be wrong.

What made you cringe about it?

Less than ideal conditions can affect a beer in the long term. Or maybe its just not for you. Just because a lot of other people like something doesn't mean you will.

Did you let it warm up before you drank it?

I'd have to know what you didn't like about it before I can comment. Are you normally into Bourbon heavy stouts?

Could just be that that kind of beer isn't your style. If so, that's cool - liking BCS isn't some kind of prerequisite for being a drinker of good beer

What exactly I didnt like about it is hard to pin point, all I can really say is I just didnt. Am I into bourbon heavy stouts? I dont know. Ive been into craft only about a year and a half (Im young) so havent had others. But I love stouts and imperial stouts.

Took me forever to finish, so about half the time I was drinking it it was warmer.

My first bourbon stout was KBS, and while I liked/didn't hate it, the bourbon felt overwhelming and I questioned whether I would like BBA stouts. After my second one, I was hooked. I'm not sure if others have had a similar experience (and by the way, I'm not a bourbon drink generally), but that was mine.

I had my first BCBS (2012) last night and I will admit that it's too big (alcohol for sure and bourbon possibly) of a beer for me. On a similar note I prefer the Rochefort 8 over the 10.

Crazy thing is I left ia little in my glass in my bedroom and when I woke up this morning my room smelled bourbony. I plan to let the rest of them sit and maybe crack one open annuilly.

That's so weird. I also found some BCBS just sitting around at my Bud light drinking parents house too! Oh wait, no I didn't that would make zero sense.

With just a little over a year of craft beer, maybe you just haven't beat your palate into submission yet. Don't see many beers with subtle flavors in the 'top 50'. Highly ranked = rare, expensive, strong (in both ABV and flavor).

I'm sure your BCBS are fine. Trade them, with full storage disclosure, and see what someone else has to say. Shouldnt be too hard to get a case of something you will like for each bottle.

It's a monster of a beer. People like it because it is one of the best executed beers of its type. Just because all folks do around here is talk about huge ABV beers aged in crazy barrels doesn't mean you need to like it. Be happy that your tastes don't expand into $25/4 packs and buy and drink what you enjoy, occasionally sampling new types of beer to expand your interests.

How did you parents, who are bud light drinkers, end up with a 4 pack of BCBS in their basement for 5 years? just curious.

As for the beer there was nothing you could detect nothing that stood out? If you could pinpoint something we could tell you if that's how it was supposed to taste or of it is in fact off.

Was it overly sweet? Sour? Funky? Did you get a ton of alcohol? Bourbon?

That was pretty much my exact experience, but for me it took 3. They can definitely be an acquired taste.

sounds about right, I think it is probably fine. I'll take the gamble and trade something you would like for the rest of the three if you want. not trying to be douchey or anything, but am serious. If you dont like it, trade for some great stuff you do like.

You don't think he can get a case of Sierra Nevada priced beers for a bottle of 07 BCBS from someone local?

I personally wouldn't give a case of SNPA or whatever for one improperly cellared 12oz BCBS, but I guess there are some that would do it as an in person trade.
