Just looking for a quick explanation of why you would choose to follow someone. Is this same/similar to the buddy list on the 'old' site? Any benefits or features I'm not aware of?

So thats how that follow thing works. Thanks for pointing that out Todd. Feel like a noob now.

    Cheers!

Hey Todd, is there any way to have the members you follow on the same page as the "Start a New Conversation" page? It's a pain to go back and forth to remember everyone to send the message to, and it'd be nice to just be able to click on them again to add them to the list instead of trying to remember how to spell their names. Though the name prediction does help, it still takes a lot longer to send out a big message.

Also, is there any way to allow more than 25 members in the conversation? Some advantages of this on the user end would be things like organizing private tastings with the people you follow and organizing meeting up or what's being shared at a beer release. It's rough to split these things into two conversations because people can't see what's going on in the other.

Sorry, the add-on doesn't support this. It would also be very resource heavy, which is why sites like Facebook don't offer this either; imagine loading dozens, hundreds of thousands. We're considering enabling the creation of contact groups, but they'd be a limit on how many groups you could create and how many participants would be allowed in each group.

There is, but we're not keen on increasing this due to potential spam/abuse.

Has this ever been a problem on BA?

I figured that was the reason, but isn't 25 still a little small? I don't think spammers would be enticed to go to work here if it were bumped up to 50, which is a number I could live with. The small increase would go a long way in helping us organize tastings and other such community based activities that can be difficult with the current limit.

Please take some time to reconsider. I think you'd make a lot of your users happy.

Dan and Myself are part of the same group, and sometimes two separate messages have to be sent out to get everyone, and then someone has to tell BOTH groups what the other has said/determined/is bringing.

We just have too many friends. :grimacing:

re: why follow people, yeah, to creep them out :grinning:.

re: 25 member limit... i can see why increasing would help, but i think as long as you guys sort of nominate a "go between" to open up different conversations, it shouldn't require that much extra ad hoc effort (ie don't need to get everyone's email address or anything, just have one person on the site who doesn't mind reposting stuff in conversations).

Right, but the whole point is about ease. Referencing the first paragraph of my first post in this thread, when I want to send out a message to the people I follow, I have to open a second tab in my browser, pull up my public profile page, Click on Show All Followers, then either highlight, copy, and paste each name on the list back to the first tab, or awkwardly try to type out each name using the second as a reference and hoping the auto recognition takes over my poor spelling.

And after hearing Todd's explanation, I'm alright with it if it can't be done, but he said opening up the limit on messages is something he CAN do to make our lives easier, so I'm really hoping it's given some serious consideration.

Or maybe Chad's right and we just have too many friends. I mean, connecting with REAL people wasn't what the internet was created for anyway, right?

PS: Sorry about the editorial.

np. im a bit wary of the spam potential though, especially with slight rise of people doing the whole drunk freakout thing after the bros are asleep. if theres a sophisticated enough way to implement it though, would be good.

I thought this was done exclusively to make me feel paranoid. How else should I respond when I get an alert that says "X is now following you"?

Allowing more people in conversations is a must. Our general tasting group is too large to put in one BM. I think 35-50 would be a much needed increase.
