http://shine.yahoo.com/shine-food/beer-better-not-ice-cold-172600166.html Was expecting another misinformed beer article from Yahoo when I clicked on this article but it actually has some merit. Even pokes fun at BMC for all their work in trying to make people believe that the colder the beer the better...
Why ice-cold beer is a mistake Nothing groundbreaking, but an article I found on Yahoo. Kinda amusing to read the overwhelming feedback that disagree.
To us, this is old news. But it is nice to see mainstream media come out with a piece that goes in the right direction. Personally, I've having more fun reading the comments to the article.
the comments made me sad well and i kinda want to tell the guy who threatens to kill the next person who tells him how to drink his beer how he should drink his beer
It would suck to have a legitimately 'ice-cold' beer. That shit would be solid. You couldn't even drink it.
The comment are awful. On this note I had a natty light for the first time in awhile tonight...and for that one the colder the better.
Yeah, I'm guessing the people that gawked at the idea of not drinking something that's ice cold imagined drinking one of their flavorless bmc's that way, which I understand. I'm assuming that same demographic only drinks strictly for the buzz factor. They probably never tried an imperial stout, barleywine, dubbel, tripel, saison, quad, etc...
Yea I started a thread titled "Actually a decent beer article on Yahoo" and johnnytightlips posted the same article a few minutes later under this title...BA combined them to avoid redundancy from what I can tell.
Nothing too surprising or groundbreaking, or especially new to craft drinkers. Still, it made for a good read- a lot of my jackass military colleagues should take a hint (note: not bashing the military, just te tastes/beer knowledge I have seen in it). That being said, I don't mind ice cold beer. With meals I prefer to have my beer at around the proper serving temp and frosted mugs piss me off to no end. If I'm reviewing, I usually have my eers cold but not freezing. However, when I'm out at the each I try to keep a cooler of icy Yuengling mearby. After a day of working out in the heat, I have no problem cracking open a colder-than-it-probably-should-be hefeweizen. One thing I also would say the article lacks is A very important point: While marketing colder beers as refreshing is annoying and stupid, it's not entirely because That's a shitty argument (i.e. it's up to the consumer how cold the beer will be)- it's mainly because the vast majority of beers would be refreshing when served ice-cold and in a frosted glass.
The comments are pretty funny. As expected, most of them didn't read the article. Just like you need to let a piece of meat rest before carving it, letting beer come to its proper temperature before serving is a good idea. An ice cold PBR is still pretty refreshing, but it's not something I'd do with a quality imperial stout, quad, or IPA.
