Why is availability such a huge factor?

Here's something I've wondered ever since I started watching beer reviews.

tl;dr: Why do some reviewers deduct points for a great beer just because it isn't easily available?

I get the basic idea behind it. If you had something and loved it, you're going to want more. Preferrably as cheap as possible, and you wouldn't want to go out of your way to get it.

Yet somehow, that kind of clashes with the whole idea of craft beer to me. We drink craft beer because we want something that transcends meager macro products. The same thing could be said for wine: obviously your basic supermarket wine isn't going to be amazing. Heck, the complete opposite could be said for the wine and spirit world: the more expensive and rare the bottle, the better.

But apparently in the world of craft beer, it's only natural that everything is readily available at the drop of a hat? "Tasting the rare" aside, what are your opinions on enjoying a beer that's harder-to-get and would you deduct points as a reviewer because it's retired and rare as rockin' horse sh**?

I have not noticed this phenomenon at all. I thought reviewers gave higher scores to rare beers.

That's obviously the other side of the spectrum, often seen on rating websites like BA. I tend to see quite a few beer reviewers on other platforms, like YouTube, do what I mentioned though.

I never seen much underrating on rb/ba, I seen way too much overrating on local beer /places....
sadly there is no standard to review by other than your own, sure there is the bjcp, but how many can actually rate to that without training? I always said the reviews are just for fun and you, if you take them to a standard many times without 1000's of review they are meaningless....now once over 1000 they start to average out the highs and lows; still one might hate that beer no mater what.....

but to knock off points for how hard to get its just stupid IMHO.
