I dry hopped my first extract ipa 3 days ago. I bumped up the sanitizer powder solution that came with my kit to sanitize my mesh hop bag. After dry hopping I realized the sanitizer was so strong it sounded like sprite in the bucket. Will this ruin or effect my beer at all??? I hope I’m just over thinking it and it will be fine. PLEASE HELP! Thanks

I don't get what you are saying here. Did you mean that it created a bubbling reaction of some sort?

What type of sanitizer did you use?

P.S. Welcome to the BA site and to the Homebrewing forum.

I’ll go out on a limb (which can be risky around here) and say that your sanitizer is probably pretty safe, even if you saw some foaming or crackling.

I know a guy named Chuck Papazian who says “relax. Don’t worry. Have a home brew.” I think this probably applies in your case, brah.

Sanitizing powder? Hmm. It must be something that foams, and that is what you heard. Foam is good because it gets into things liquids might not.

Sorry let me clarify; it was powder sanitizer that came with my northern brewer kit. There was no foam, and since I didn’t mix it with a full gallon of water I just kind of eye balled it. I realized that it was way stronger than when I sanitized all of my equipment for the mash/racking. I’m just kinda worried that I sanitized my mesh bag for the dry hops with a sanitizer that was too strong, and might effect my secondary fermentation. Is it possible to mix too strong of a sanitizer solution?

    Don't fear the foam.

With star san it is, I'm not sure about the product you used. Consider this though, you just completely diluted any that remained on the bag in gallons of beer. You're fine.

If it came in a kit, it was probably cleaner not sanitizer...anyway most will have a ppm range on the mixing instructions...+ 100% is probably nothing to worry about.

This sounds like a plot by InBev to distribute bad sanitizer to new homebrewers in an attempt to get said brewers to give up the hobby and buy more "crafty" beer.

There is a good chance extra sanitizer will screw up your beer's flavor. You will probably be able to drink it but you may not win any awards. GreernKrusty101's advice to read Palmer is spot on.
