Port Brewing / Lost Abbey should be the posterboy brewery for this thread....and I'm not just talking uncarbonated beer here.

Well, let me first state that I do not support drinking local simply because it is local.

One aspect that I appreciate about drinking local beer is that for my area I can readily obtain fresh beer. There is quick turnover of locally brewed packaged beer at my local beer retailers.

And needless to say but drinking at the brewery/brewpub you are guaranteed of drinking fresh beer.

I am fortunate that there are a lot of breweries/brewpubs in my area that brew high quality beer.

    Cheers!

Q: Do you mean consistency in terms of one of the brewery's products (i.e., a certain beer is good, then bad, then good again)?

Or do you mean consistency in terms of producing good different beers?

Both really, but I more so meant within a given title. So for example ABC Ipa is great 1 batch, OK next batch, good, terrible etc

Please define what quality means to you or in this context. Quality is a confusing term on this site because many people think it means whether or not they like the taste of a beer; and other people think it means the ability of a brewer consistently produce beer free of technical flaws (i.e. infections, oxidation, skunking, proper carbonation, etc.), which are independent of the intended flavor of the beer. I can't tell from your post exactly which camp you are in.

To answer your question... I think if a brewery can't get the technical part of brewing figured out and is knowingly or ignorantly putting a flawed product on the market that has infections, oxidation, flavor variability, ect., then forget them. If a brewer doesn't bother to incorporate proper QA/QC into their process that shows they don't really care about their product, so why should I?

If a brewery makes beers I simply don't like the flavor of but is doing all of the technical aspects of brewing and QA/QC correctly, then I'm more forgiving. The brewer may just have a different vision than I do, or catering to a different segment of the market, and that's OK. I might not buy their beer as often, but I wouldn't criticize or write them off completely.

Quality is a surprisingly subjective term. It's like defining pornography - you know it when you see (taste) it. To me it's how consistently a brewery produces beer without technical flaws. I don't like BMC beer, but you know what you're getting every single time and to me that's high-quality (though not tasty).

I've had a few 12 packs of SN that taste like the beer was from two different batches.

Prairie for me. I've had a lot of infected bottles from them.

I can live with a beer that is executed in the intended fashion but misses my pallette. I'm speaking about technical flaws.

And I can live with admitted flaws. But if you don't admit the flaw or mistake until after you've sold that batch...that's very questionable

I'm starting to think of Brasseurs Illimités as being very inconsistent. The beers that I've had from them range from completely uninispired (the Oka abbey blond) to really solid (Cascade IPA and their saison) to excellent (DH DIPA). And last night, I opened a bottle of DH to find that it was completely oxidized, tasting like one of my worse homebrew efforts. Very disappointing, when I know that they are capable of brewing some really tasty beers.

Since the name of this thread is "wildly inconsistent breweries," I assumed he meant the latter. (Otherwise, if the former was intended, I suppose "wildly inconsistent beers" would've been a more appropriate title.)

Yup, I know that, but was responding to the shelf beer part, because it's also widely available year round.

I never drain pour a good beer for flatness, I use it to cook with. A better meat marinade does not exist.

Two different breweries making the same beer, but they taste entirely different. The original Alpine makes it, you're good to go. If Green Flash makes it, prepared to be disappointed. They say the difference is due to filtering at Green Flash(Alpine does not), but whatever it is, it's wildly inconsistent now.

Agree. I've always enjoyed IPA, Honkers Ale, and Harvest too.
