I'm sure they will still brew beer there, it just won't be able to carry the "Trappist" logo any longer.

Not enough Trappists onsite to qualify as a Trappist monastery?

One of the 5 monks would have to want to learn the process and, from my understanding of the article, when an abbey gets down to numbers similar to what they are dealing with, the monks usually just leave and go to another abbey. Since this is an off-shoot of Westmalle, they would most likely go there to live.

For some reason, the link appears to be dead already, but the mayor or other town official said that if that were to happen, the town would continue to brew beer there.

Sad news if that actually happens. Achel is not the most talked-about trappist but they make some solid beers.

Whilst it is true that they will probably leave the monastery to join Westmalle.
The rule stipulates: “The beer must be brewed within the walls of a Trappist monastery, either by the monks themselves or under their supervision.”

They don’t need to learn how to brew, supervision is just fine.

I've only had 1 bottle of Achel Extra and it was really really delicious.

I always seem to be advocating for this beer on this site and will continue to do so. This beer holds its own against Westy, Rochefort, St. Bernie, etc. For me it may even best all of them. It's been hard enough to aquire any around my parts the past few years. It'd be shame for it to disappear completely.

I've only had one but it did hold its own against true big 3. It caught me off guard. My supply line dried up as well.

I completely agree that Achel Extra is a very special beer. It stakes out a different territory for Trappist ales. While beautifully malty and not with the least bit of annoying "sweetness", Extra continues on with a vinious character and a damned lip-smacking dryish full bore finish. One of my all time favorites.
