Well, we BAs kinda live in our own unique segment of the beer world but the top 5 selling beers in the US are lagers:

    · Bud Light

    · Miller Lite

    · Coors Light

    · Bud

    · Michelob Ultra

I am pretty sure that the above beers were not what @slander had in mind when he started this thread but these five beer brands absolutely dominate the beer market and I would be willing to bet that they will no longer 'go away'.

    Cheers!

I'm my defense, I didn't know 400 year old German breweries made lagers. I assumed it was a kettle sour with fruit loops.

I think lagers are a bit better than their reputation.

They are history and culture, became one-sided for some decades, forgive them

Why we just keep buying IPAs and stouts make em think we're still gaga over those and hops while keeping the lager hype to a minimum as possible.

I'm just waiting for people to stop referring to "lager" like it's a beer style. Please. Just stop.

Like saying ale being a style. Good point. They are kind of mega styles.

    Uh....no .
When it's good, it's really good. For them & anything else.
Think positive : they generally have a longer window of "good", so your chances of finding a good one that's still good, is better.
    "Good", even. :heavymetal:

Yeah, they're historical terms that have such overbroad meanings in the modern world that they're almost meaningless.

The real crime that drives me crazy is when someone on this site (so you assume they've got a better than average knowledge about beer, and they certainly have access to the knowledge) says something like, "they make great lagers and pilsners!"

    Makes my hair bristle.

Also, was in a lagery mood for the beer fridge at work earlier this week so I grabbed a 12 pack of scrimshaw. Didn't even think about the fact that it's probably the end of the slowest sales season for that beer and didn't check the date at a store that moves it so well I've gotten out of the habit of checking. Damn August dating. :astonished::grimacing: My pilsner urge remains unsatisfied

What is this thing called love?
I don't understand what that mood is because your descriptor is almost meaningless.

Funny. I'm drinking a Paulaner Pils right now and it's got some serious bitter, herbal hop quality goin' on.

Don't tell the hop-heads about this -- it could be too much for them to comprehend!

    From the OP:

“And you know when something becomes a thing, there’ll be that day when people are over that thing and breweries stop making that thing because people have moved on to some other thing.”

This reminds me of the story of Firestone Walker Pivo Pils:

When I first saw Pivo Pils at my local retailers (several years ago), my first purchase was fresh product and I loved those beers. But unfortunately it was not too long where all of the Pivo Pils on the shelves were old and I instead purchased locally brewed, fresh Pilsners.

At some point Firestone Walker decided to discontinue Pivo Pils as a year-round standalone product. This was sorta an academic business decision for me since with nothing but old Pivo Pils on the shelves this was a non-purchase for me.

But then in 2022 Firestone Walker decided to bring this beer back and once again I saw fresh Pivo Pils at my local beer retailer so I bought a six-pack and enjoyed those beers but just like before after this first introduction there was nothing but old product at my beer retailers. Once again I have not re-purchased Pivo Pils and instead I buy local, fresh Pilsners instead.

I have no way of knowing if folks in other areas are able to consistently find non-old Pivo Pils or if there situation is akin to mine.

I wonder how long until Pivo Pils is discontinued (again)?

Well, I suppose the good news is that after Sierra Nevada decided to cancel Summerfest that beer will be back again this year as a summer seasonal. But if this 2023 release doesn’t sell well I suppose this beer could be discontinued (again)?

    Cheers!

Oh ya know, when an ale just won't do it and you need the only other kind of beer :stuck_out_tongue:

I accept different kinds of expression. Guess pilsner is hoppy and lager not so hoppy . But not even pilsner is IPA hoppy.

Careful, do you really want to stir up the "Stouts are not a subset of Ale" discussion and the broader argument about modern American style classification vs. historical British usage of terms?

On the other extreme, there seems to be a trend towards labeling beers with ever-more obscure lager sub-styles. Most recent for me was this beer labeled as an "Alsatian Style Pilsner". Yes I had to google it, Alsace is a region of eastern France that borders Germany and Switzerland. Based on this BA article, seems the only difference is they use a bit of corn in their pilsners, which Human Robot did for this beer: "Brewed with French pilsner malt, 25% corn, and strisselspalt hops"

While that other extreme can definitely draw some eye rolls, I know which one I'd pick. The overly specific style delineation at least tries to offer some deeper information. Whether they succeed or not is another issue
