Been thinking for a while of doing a run to Wisc to get some New Glaurus or whatever other goodies I can get. Driving up from Chicago, what would be the closest worthwhile store to IL Border, coming from Chicago that would have "worthwhile" stuff.
Woodman's in Kenosha has a very nice selection of New Glarus and Central Waters beers. Also in the direct vicinity is Mars Cheese Castle and they have a surprising selection of WI beers too.
I always suggest Fox River Spirits in Wilmot to people going for a border run. It's a bit west of Antioch so maybe too far out of the way, but I like giving them business whenever possible.
They usually have most/all of what is available, but they do tend to sell out of popular stuff. They have Belgian Red and Raspberry Tart as well as the Thumbprints (but these sell out). They have the seasonal stuff too but I've seen them run out of Dancing Man Wheat before. I usually go to the Sentry in Twin Lakes on the same road trip and they usually have whatever Fox River Spirits doesn't, so it works out well. The Sentry is a tad cheaper ($1 a six pack or so) but I like to give the little guys more business so I only buy from Sentry if I have to. They are about 10 minutes drive away from each other.
Let it be fully acknowledged that this is a Chicago BA asking where is the best place to pick up bottles in Wisconsin. If we get too many more of these threads, I'm going to request that Chicago and all of Illinois be moved to the Midwest forum. I'm going to get so sick of these damn threads about Wisconsin...
For a quick over the border nip I really like Woodmans. It's a co-op and they have some great food there. I usually load up on beer, get some seasonal produce, and local cheeses + bacons. Who doesn't love cheese and bacon? (If they still have it at Woodmans the Furthermore Obscura cali common w/ iced coffee has been a summer delight.)
Go to Woodmans in Kenosha cuz as Phil Woodman says,"Better products. Better prices. Sold by better people cuz we're employee owned." Can't go wrong with that.
I posted a similar thread last month and went with Woodman's in Kenosha. I wasn't disappointed. Lots of New Glarus. Had a delicious nectarine as well.
Oddly enough, Mars Cheeese castle specializes in WI beers for the out of towners, but Woodman's is less expensive for sure.
another place in kenosha called Tenuta's, it is off of 158, the first exit past hwy 50 about 4 miles east of the highway, around 30th ave. They have an exceptional selection, not just Wisconsin either.
