I'm going to be in Virginia in about two weeks, staying with family in Ashburn and looking to bring some beer back to Wisconsin. Just wondering what I should be on the lookout for. I'm kind of an IPA/Saison/Pilsner guy, so I guess recommendations for those styles are mostly what I'm interested in, but would be interested in other styles. I don't plan on having time to shop in D.C., so if anyone has any great store suggestions in Ashburn or near vicinity that's also helpful. Will also have my two very young kids with me, so unfortunately, bar suggestions are of no help.

I would suggest beers/IPAs by SmuttyNose (Finest Kind IPA and any of their stouts/porters), Green Flash (I love West Coast IPA and Palate Wrecker has just come out), and Firestone Walker (Union Jack and Double Jack) - Scuaba is still on the shelves in DC, so hopefully its also there in Ashburn.

Troegs and Weyebacher should also be in Virginia. I lived in MI before, and we didn't get any of these beers, but I don't know about distrubution to Wisconsin.

New Belgium also should distribute to VA - La Folie is a great sour and Ranger (IPA) and Shift (Pale Lager) aren't bad.

I am in DC, so don't have great recommendations for stores to shop at, but hopefully this should help you with some brews to look out for!

You can come see me this Friday (two days from now) at Market Cellars in Reston (10 min away). From 4:30-7:30pm we're tasting DC Brau beers. Plus we've got plenty of local and hard to find suds you'd probably enjoy.

Just a thought. Enjoy your visit!

You should try to get some Lot 3 ipa by Evolution, double simcoe ipa by weyerbacher, double dog or raging bitch by flying dog, exit 4 by flying fish. Currently you can find two of the three versions saison due buff collaboration by stone/dogfish/victory I think victory's version is slightly better than dogfish version and both readily available now. I think you should also pick up victory's prima pils to complete your set. Your best bet would be to go to a store like Total Wine to make sure you have access to all of them. There are l three of them around ashburn depending on where exactly you'll be staying. You'll find a much smaller selection at a store like Wegmans but sometimes you can find some gems there. If you're willing to bring some new glarus I'd be up for an in person trade so you can avoid running around to hunt down those beers and I've got some more exotic stuff like guava grove by cigar city brewing from Florida. I hope that helps and hopefully I can set up a trade for new glarus, I've been dying to try some of their stuff but they only distribute in Wisconsin

Also, I don't know if you can get southern tier in Wisconsin but right now you can find their Gemini and oak aged unearthly! Great iPas. Also, yet another pils, my Antonia by dogfish

Total Wine and Bev in Chantilly isn't too far from Ashburn and there is a Dogfish Head resturant in the same strip mall. Lots of stuff available at TW&B. Not sure how hard it is to come by where you live, but they will have La Moneuse, which is an interesting saison. I doubt you find another with as much yeast shelliac on the inside of the bottle.

I don't know if you get Stillwater in Wisconsin, I think they are out of Maryland and if you like saisons apparently they know what they are doing. If you're lucky maybe you can find a bomber of Williamsburg Alewerks Bitter Valentine, a solid imperial ipa, Alewerks is startin to get pretty damn good. For that matter, their Drake Tail IPA has been on point recently. And I think I heard their bourbon barrel porter should be out soon. Seriously one of the best barrel aged beers I have had, and only like $7. DC Brau cans recently hit the markets here, their pale ale and IPA are both pretty good. Lost Rhino is a new brewery located in Ashburn, but I haven't been too impressed with anything of theirs. Still, if you're in Ashburn, you'd probably be a fool not to hit it up. Port City out of Alexandria is kinda the same way, their porter is delicious, the rest of their beers are well made but nothing to write home about. Someone mentioned Lot #3 IPA by Evolution, definately a good one. Occasionally possibly you might come across Blue Mountain Full Nelson Pale Ale, an awesome straightforward pale ale, I think the brewery grows all the hops for that beer themselves. The closest stores with a decent beer selection you will find anywhere close to Ashburn are Total Wine or Whole Foods, or a last resort Wegmans, and I've actually started to see some decent brews popping up in some Giant grocery stores in the area (never thought I would see Double Jack at Giant). I'm not too familiar with saisons/pilsners, but some good non local IPAs that you can get around here: Firestone Walker Union Jack / Double Jack, Green Flash IPA / Imperial IPA / Palate Wrecker, Avery Maharaja, Moylan's Hopsickle, Caldera IPA, Oskar Blues Dale's Pale Ale / Deviant Dale's IPA, Ballast Point Sculpin IPA, Epic Imperial IPA, you probably get many of those in Wisconsin, and I'm sure I forgot some, and I left some out I'm sure you get in Wisconsin, but hopefully that gives you some idea. Ok, my growler of oak chocolate yeti deliciousness is kickin in...

Ashburn Wine Shop may be worth a stop. They do beer tastings on Thursdays from 530 pm. I also recommend making a stop at Lost Rhino. +1 on Stillwater. If you don't get that in WI, I highly recommend it. He makes some great saisons.

    Also, huge consign on AleWerks.

Growler fill of Yeti probably came from Whole Foods Fair Lakes aka NOVA Beer Central. The buyer there (Lee) is too notch and he has I think a dozen or more taps with great beer for growlers. WF Reston also has growler fills, but only 6 taps and not as much rotation. Hope that helps!

Thanks for the info. I checked Vienna's website and it wasn't there. Will check Fair lakes.

Indeed the growler was filled at Fair Lakes Whole Foods. They have like 16 taps spread out amongst their various eateries. Always good stuff you can't find on draft anywhere else around here. 10 of em are pretty much always session beers, but the 6 at the cheese area have seen quite a few high gravity brews. Man, I'm gettin thirsty

Jerk , The TWB on Rt. 7 in the shopping center across the street from NOVA Comm. Colege is a lot closer.
Look to bring home form Heavy Seas from Baltimore and Duck Rabbit from NC. Epic Brewing from Utah took home the bronze in imperial IPA at the GABF. Their beer is available out here.

Another good place to have beer in Ashburn is Ford's Fish Shack. This is also the after hours place for the Lost Rhino crew. Sterling has Sweetwater Tavern (brewpub). Leesburg has Tuscarora Mill, Fireworks Pizza, and Vintage 50 (brewpub).
