I wanted to start this thread as over the last couple of years I have grown very fond of this brewery. They make very good beers and over the last year have been starting to barrel age some of their stuff.. This weekend I had their Barrel Aged Train Hopper..Which is their IPA aged in Buffalo Trace barrels..I know, I know...BB IPA's suck..blah blah...I will tell you. This beer is FANTASTIC!! It has a very, very small trace of bourbon but the barrel really brought out the citris..The regular train hopper is not a hop bomb, so no effects there and it had a nice malty character..LOVED IT..On top of that, it came in 10oz pours and it was only $4.50..It has a 7.1%ABV... The have quite a few other good beers and constantly rotate..The owners Ryan and Erin are Fantastic down to earth people. I would recommend this place to go to anyone..Now its a very small place, but ive heard they are looking to expand in the next couple of years, which would be great..It is in South Lyon,Mi fyi...
Yeah working in Livonia this would not take me far off the beaten path to give them a try. Thanks for the mention tommyz.
I stopped in the other week on my way back from Detroit and was really impressed with the brews. Location is a bit odd in a strip mall but once inside was a cool place.
They have bottled Big Doedish which is their DIPA..They have also bottled after Barrel Aged xmas xmas ale..
Solid place, but nothing that stands out that far from other Michigan Breweries IMO. Nice small spot to stop if you're in the area though.
BA Train Hopper IS still on tap as of Sat night...very subtle bourbon notes...its good and they are up and coming...they have several good beers that pack a punch but need a lil refinement still...
I was there sat night as well...I agree they need some refinement..But I expect that with growing breweries who try a bunch of things..imo..
I live in Livonia and meet my cousin up there a couple of times a month. I give the owners lots of credit. They opened a brewery on a shoestring budget, started off strong, and are getting better as time goes on. The owners and staff are really friendly too. One night when I was there this black Labrador befriended me the whole time I was there. Yes they do allow well behaved dogs in the place. The dogs owner was embarrassed and kept apologizing to me, but the old dog was really cool. He just sat quietly next to me letting me pet him. Don't know why, but of all the people in the brewery including his owner, I was like his long lost friend. I've got a feeling that this place will grow and prosper.
Much agreed on this post. Had the BA Train Hopper and thought it was great, tasted more fruit than bourbon. In general I'm very impressed with WH, especially given the size and capacity of the place. In SE Michigan it is top 3, with Kuhnhenn and Jolly Pumpkin. I think the Doedish is one of the best DIPAs in the state, just a notch below Liberator and DRIPA. In general, right now, they've demonstrated a lot of talent for the heavier beers, with the Fear of the Dark Black Barleywine and Night Fury Imp Stout being very good. Of their lighter beers, 1908 Smoke Wheat Ale and their Gose (a collab with Country Boy Brewing in Lexington KY) are really good too. In general, a good spirit about them. I think they have the potential to be a little brother/sister to Kuhnhenn, who I understand they're currently collaborating with. They brew their own wine too, like Kuhnhenn, and usually the sign of a brewer with a lot of patience and love of the craft in general.
Good place. Good owners. They are doing it right with mostly very good beer. The main problem is they can't keep up.
I have been there a couple times and really like their beers. The Big Doedish and Night Fury are two of my favorites.
I do not believe they are currently doing a collab..They are trying to find time in their schedules to get together..Also, I believe their wines are made for them by a company in Jackson
About 3.5 weeks back we went to TC and had to stop at Shorts on the way. Who was setting at the corner of the bar but Erin and Ryan Cottongim. We have talked enough times that we were all recognized, laughed, and had a nice chat.
