So today I drove 120 miles to try their BBA barleywine that was released this afternoon. I was told it was for mug club members only. I explained I drove a long distance and even called earlier in the week. He refused to sell me a glass. I left, pissed as hell. I urge others to not frequent this place.

I've never been but have heard great things about it. Not sure why you would drive 120miles just to go there, but that does suck for ya.

Not sure why your'e complaining. They specifically advertised that it would only be served to their Mug Club members.

This is how their taplist looked on their website about 11:30 this morning. And it was the same on Tuesday when I looked to see if they had any of their beerfest beers on tap.

Their facebook page also calls out that it was to be mug club only.

Maybe it was mug club only through yesterday. If it is still mug club only and they took it down, that is shady.

From their facebook post on July 20th:

Look, if I had driven 120 miles expecting to buy something only to come away empty handed, I'd be pissed to. And it probably would've been a better move as a business for Witch's Hat to sell to him anyways, particularly after hearing his determination to try their products. But it's a pet peeve of mine when someone starts bad mouthing others on the internet because they didn't get what they feel they deserved.

I don't have a vested interest Witch's Hat, other than they're somewhat local to me and I've stopped in a few times. They seem like nice people and they're trying to start a business doing what they love.

The correct response from them would have been to simply sell me a glass. It is a fine line to require money(mug club membership) for an item in a public business. If you had been closed to the general public at the time, then that practice is fine.

When you called earlier in the week, was anything said of it being mug club only? Did you ask specifically if that beer would be available? If you did and were told it was available, and not mug club only, then it is their issue and should have sold you the beer. If you did not ask, or ignored their answer and drove they 120 miles, that's on you. They were just sticking to the policy that they were told to follow. Was there a manager or owner there? If you had a complaint, you would have been best asking to talk to one of them, and not getting pissed at the bar tender. Perhaps they would have at least let you buy the beer, maybe even given you a pour.

They should've better thought out the name of the website. At least throw in a hyphen.

YES I called, and The bartender told me if I joined the mug club, I could buy that beer. For those of you less educated, this is called Undue influence!

So, let me get this straight on the timeline here: you called the brewery to inquire about the beer, and they told you that you needed to join the mug club in order to purchase the beer on the 25th. This fact was also indicated on their website and on their Facebook page. So, you proceeded to drive 120 miles to the brew pub on the 25th to try to buy the beer without joining the mug club. They wouldn't sell it to you, so you got pissed off, left, and posted a thread on the internet to slander the brewery. Makes perfect sense.

I wouldn't call that "undue influence". I would call it poor planning and maybe even poor decision-making.

So.....when you showed up for the mug club only beer, they wouldn't let you sign up for the club and then buy the beer? Or you wanted the beer without being in the club?

    I am confused here.

I was not informed that this was a mug club only release until I arrived at the brewery. I read about the release in a reliable Ann Arbor forum that talked about the upcoming beer events for the week. That is why I called before traveling there. I have traveled to hundreds of breweries around the country and have not seen this practice of offering on tap releases to members only.

Ok, so before you traveled there you called them and the bartender said if you joined the club you could buy the beer.

Then when you arrived, they wouldn't let you sign up for the club? I am missing something here.

    Well which is it????

Just drive another 120 miles to the MI Summer Beer Fest, Witch's Hat will be pouring it there. It would save us all from reading your conflicting stories.

I suppose I should just let Jale explain himself, but here is what I think he's trying to say(in a confusing way):

    1. He read about the release on an Ann Arbor forum - AND IT MADE NO MENTION OF MUG CLUB ONLY

    2. He called the brewery to make sure that there indeed was a release on Wednesday. Since he didn't know anything about it being mug club only, and he'd never been to a release that had ever been for "club members" only, he didn't think to ask if he would be "allowed" to buy the beer. AND the person on the phone made no mention of it.

    3. He drove 120 miles, ordered the beer and was told "you have to be a mug club member to buy this beer and I'd be happy to sell you a mug club membership"

    4. He didn't want a mug club membership and left angry.

If this is what happened, I'd be pissed too! As was mentioned before though, perhaps speaking to a manager would have helped.
