Wondering what ill effects an airplane ride could have on a vial of WLP yeast? My LHBS doesn't carry WLP but the LHBS in my dad's town does and I would like to get the newly released Brett Trois. My dad is coming up for Thanksgiving via plane (Sac to Seattle to Eugene, OR). Wondering if it would be okay to have him bring it on the plane or have him drive it up some other time. Thanks for the feedback.
I wouldn't anticipate any ill effects on the yeast, but if it is not in his checked bags, I would expect some ill effects on your father by TSA. How long is the trip? I've left vials of yeast in my car for up to five hours. I made a starter with it before pitching and didn't notice any difference. And that was during a New Orleans summer. As long as the yeast is not exposed to freezing temps, I don't think it will be a problem.
I think it will be fine if you travel with an ice pack, though the ice pack may not be allowed as a carry-on. Maybe also bring a ziplock bag so if your ice pack is confiscated you can ask your flight attendant for some ice once you get on the plane.
Actually, instead of that I would just mail order some yeast. So you pay a few bucks extra for shipping, it's worth it to save your dad the hassle of doing this favor for you, and you'll get it more quickly to boot.
TSA is definitely going to give you trouble taking yeast on the plane. Putting the yeast in your checked bags is probably a better bet, though there's no way to be certain what kind of temperatures it will experience. Packing it in an insulated lunch box with an ice pack should protect it from extreme temps on both ends.
