World of Beer opens today (6/12) in Naperville. On the positive side, it's a place dedicated to beer. However on the con side, will craft beer survive the corporatizing & franchisation.

Just about the most boring craft list I have seen in quite a while.

Yeah... And they just opened the doors last night. They better blow the roof off this weekend with some killer taps. Considering they don't even have a kitchen to make food, what's the draw there? Just going in a looking at 70 taps would be cool, but maybe if one of them was pouring something worth the drive. It's nothing i can't get down at the local Tap House.

Blegh. At least they have Summer Shandy for $3.50 a bottle.

i'm not from the burbs or go out there much, but maybe that's the thing? burb folks getting craft beer instead of driving to the city? i guess their customer base shouldn't be from chicago. my guess. draft list isn't terrible, if it was a local spot, i'd stop by for sure.

But with Bavarian Lodge less than 15 minutes away, why would anyone bother with WOB?

Bavarian Lodge is where its at. And with an almost equal driving distance between it and WoB, I'd take the uncommon tap selection at BL instead. However, some people just wanna be in with the in-crowd and drink craft beer. And their in business to make money, and that's probably the best way to do it.

Man, tough crowd...I'll agree that BL is in a league on it's own, but I welcome any new bars that offer more than the usual BMC suspects. And I think they have/will have an outdoor beer garden, something missing at BL.

Yeah, I suppose that's true. And the beer garden area is a nice touch. And maybe it will help table the screaming trend a little faster.

Any word on how food is going to work there? If I'm going to sit around drinking beers, I am definitely going to need something to eat.

I was there for the friends and family night last night. The Taps are just as boring as the bottle choices. It's a very good mix overall for people who haven't tried everything under the sun though. I disliked the lack of sours. I do give them credit for allowing unlimited 2 oz tastings of the tap choices. I'll give the place credit where credit it due, for non-BA's, this place is a great way to expand their beer horizons. I had a conversation with the regional manager, and he tried VERY hard to bring up some Cigar City for the opening, and was disappointed he couldn't bring some up. That would have been AMAZING.

They don't serve food, but they allow you to bring in outside food. We ran over to Naf Naf.

Oh, their "killer" tap is Hop Juice...

I was there tonight and found the same: lots of just-OK taps and bottles. Loud and crowded, but to be expected on opening night. Had one beer and left. Agree that it's good for non-BA's to get acquainted and for more general craft exposure. Also agree with BA's above that I would definitely frequent a suburban Taphouse Grill or make a trip downtown to Revolution or Haymarket instead. Not my cup of tea. Cheers!

Fessing up, I had to see a joint that offers beer only, no food or booze. Had Hop Juice, Two-Hearted, and Hop Rod Rye, there's enough interesting stuff to make an occasional stop worthwhile. Windy City Exec's and One Brother made appearances, so there's hope for the future. What I didn't get was that roughly half of the fifty taps were foreign brews, and alot of those appeared to be Euro-trash variations. From a quality tap list and special tap take-overs perspective I would agree that Bavarian's the place in the western burbs. But if tuetonic decor, somewhat quirky hours, and sub-par sports veiwing devices ain't your thing, WOB presents a local alternative for craft brews.

Looks like a nice intermediate step between BMC and joining us nerds on BA

It actually opened Monday night for a soft opening at 8pm (I think?). I hope their selection ramps up as they get in better with their distributors!

At least they don't have Bud or Miller Light on tap... Silver lining?

What a stupid, elitist comment! What the hell does "burb folks getting craft beer instead of driving to the city?" even mean? I get my craft beer from Binny's and other beer stores, go to "the best beer bar in Chicagoland" Bavarian Lodge, and go into the city as well to drink at beer bars there.
P.S. the burbs just go electricity and indoor plumbing as well!
