Hello, I´ve tried several wood aged beers and some are great. I´m a craft brewer in Mexico and bourbon barrels are very hard to get (impossible). I´ve seen some wood chips to smoke meat at the store, also oak. Do you think that roasting them and soaking them in bourbon would work to age beer in a steel fermentor?

Here in the US You can get quite a few types is oak chip and toasted oak cubes in different roasting level.
I prefer to soak it with Bacardi or some other neutral flavor spirit just for sterilize the chip. My last visit in Mexico I got 1 Litter of mezcal, I might try soaking some the oak in it, to get the smokey flavor before use it in the beer.

That sounds good, I´ll try it with some mezcal or tequila. Thanks!

Have you tried talking to tequila/mezcal distilleries to pick up an aged barrel from them?

Another option is to just buy a new, charred barrel from the US and have it shipped. A lot of the flavor in bourbon comes from the char in the wood and aging, not necessarily the clear spirit that goes into the barrel.

I´ve tried but the price they give me is ridiculous, almost the same as if I buy the barrel full with very nice tequila.

I vote for that option too, but you'll need to invite all of us down there to help empty it. :grinning:

On topic, though, if you got a barrel can you brew enough to fill it in a very short period of time?

I've been getting into shooting lately. It's funny that I almost buy a cartridge for the same price as I buy empty brass. Then I think about the price of empty beer bottles running for $1 when I can get a bottle of Sam Adams for $1.25. Don't be afraid to buy a barrel of tequila and later use the barrel for demonic purposes. If you need to split it up between friends, split it up between friends.

Buy the full barrel and enjoy the tequila... or not sure about regulations where you are but you might be able to modify the tequila in some way (a dash of vanilla, etc.) and resell it Then use that barrel for a higher purpose!
