Surprised no mention of the upcoming bottle release of Flossmoor's Wooden Hell. I completely get the 'checkered' history of this brewery would dissuade people being overly excited about this release. And legends grow with the passage of time. But, with WH's original brewer Matt Van Wyk in on it, and the fact it's has been aging in Woodford Reserve Bourbon barrels for a year...no one's interested in speculating on 4-bombers for $80? I am in, for two reasons: (1) nostalgia for one of Chicago's original brew pubs, (2) chance that second brewing of legendary Wooden Hell lives up to at least partial expectations.

I just had the last of my Fireside Chat a month ago. I had a friend who worked there from abut 2008-2012ish and I would swing down quite a bit. BA Pullman, Thunder Snow...Their special releases have always been very good in my opinion. I had plumbing issues otherwise I might have made the trip down.
~If that's the Matt Van Wyk I think it is, his wife was a Hall Director in one of the dorms at North Central College..I think he was doing home brew at that point in 1999..Useless trivia for everyone.

Was a little put off by their facebook event page quoting secondary value as a selling point for this brew. Why not just stand behind the beer?

Not that it matters significantly but in the interest of accuracy, it's likely aged for about 9 months considering the base beer was brewed last August. Seems generally people only get excited about turbid IPAs and BA stouts with additives these days.

Unless I misread, this is a BW. BWs are just not my jam. Since Chicago is far out for me, it is difficult for me to justify that time and gas on a beer I am buying that may or may not be grand simply to offer a few select friends that are big into the style. This is just my stance, though.

Crap, it appears WH bottle pre-sale sold out immediately. Weird. Or, brewery Mug Club members could purchase tickets yesterday. Seems like there may not have been any tickets available this morning. Whatever.

So what are people expecting if you show up the day of the release?

Will it be a show up at 4 am with a lawn chair type release or a swing by on your way home from work type release?

Obviously it hasn't released in a decade, but I can't gauge the hype for this release.

i say it available around 8:30 (pst) but wasn't fast enough

    Checkered history? Do tell

I haven't heard about this brewery in a long time. I tried to trade for Wooden Hell 5 or 6 years ago, no luck.

This was my exact experience. Frankly I don't buy that they had any volume to sell at all in presale like maybe 50 tickets. No way it sells out in 4 seconds otherwise. It's all they hype machine at work and it's frustrating.

well for one a lot of their recent ba beers have missed the mark, particularly barlywine 4. their brewer left and the beers havnt been the same

Matt Van Wyk also had a string of misses at oak shire as well

I think he's probably referring to them having such a high head brewer turnover rate. Regardless, it's a beautiful brewery with pretty above average beer if you want to try something other than whales.

Yes, Flossmoor was one of the first brew pubs in Chicagoland, received early prop's for their beers, then churned through some great brewers, and never really invested in infrastructure. Could've been something bigger than just a nice little restaurant/brew pub in a quaint town.

I think the checkered part mainly came to climax with the Todd Ashman incident (he was hired away from FiftyFifty based on conditions, when he packed up and moved back here, no conditions were met and he immediately quit again and returned to California).

Any estimates on bottle count? Do you think lining up before the release will be crazy?
