Oh man, I totally forgot to report back and it's been like 6 months now! I'll go back through my notes and post them here in the next day or two.

We'll be in Köln next month for almost two full days. We'll have to follow the route you've laid out. Maybe do this in the afternoon and then go back to our favorite to hang out!

Just wanted to mention that Cologne now has two pretty nice craft beer locations (of which I am aware).

The older one is Muhlen Bar right next to Malzmuhle brauhaus. A decent selection of craft bottles (American and European).

The newer one is CraftBeer Corner Cologne located just off the Heumarkt. I went there for the first time last night. Fantastic place: Layout is very nice, 15 craft beers on tap (11 or 12 German, a few American and one Swedish) and I'm told they rotate frequently, also a nice small bottle list and the staff were very friendly.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I'll be in Cologne during my visit to Dusseldorf coming up shortly and appreciate having a few highlights suggested as a starting point.

When it comes to "craft" locations in addition to the traditional Kölsch places, apart from Craftbeer Corner Coeln that @EDNOSE mentioned, the Delirium Cafe Köln also opened very recently and is probably the best place for craft beer in Cologne now. They have 30 taps and a pretty good selection of Lambic bottles as well. It's also right across from Päffgen's smaller offshoot in the old city district.

Both CCC and DCK kinda have their pros and cons though, the former being a bit smaller and more quiet, with a more interesting beer selection (most of the time) and the latter being a bit bigger and right in the center of the bustling, touristy old city district, with a larger selection of beer. Since they are literally a 5-minute walk apart, it would be quite easy to visit both in the same evening though.

Braustelle is also very much worth visiting, even though it is a little off the beaten path and their beers can be hit and miss. It's a microbrewery, not a bar like CCC/DCK, and was one of the earliest craft beer pioneers in Germany. A lot more rustic than the other two places, with good food as well.

I live in Cologne and like to think that I know the local beer scene quite well. Send me a PM if you are interested in more information or wanna set up a meet-up and/or IP trade.

I'm glad someone revived this thread as I'll be in Köln in late November, 25 - 28.11 We start in Brussels then onto to Köln, Nürnberg, Muenchen, Regensburg - a market swing.

@spartan1979 - lift a cheek and put in your trip report(s)....

I'm not a trader but certainly like to meet up for bier with new friends.

    Nürnberg instead of Bamberg?

I'm well acquainted with Bamberg - knock, knock but the boss lady wanted a market trip. As @BayernTrips said, "the best part about Nurnberg is it's only an hour from Schlenkerla". I suspect we will hop there and maybe over to Bayreuth...

Bamberg has a lovely Xmas market, as does Forchheim actually, though both much smaller than Nürnberg, obviously.

Mostly for Biermark but happy to update others as well, below are a few of my thoughts from Cologne and Dusselforf.

WTF - All the breweries are cash only or have a minimum 100 euro to use a card. I still can't get over this. But I am very used to paying everything with cards. Every pub in Dublin accepted cards no problem even when we just had two pints. Budget 3 euro 80 every two pours plus food and expect at least 10 pours per person if not closer to 12 pours a day. Not bad price but sad that it is still about 10 euro a liter just like Oktoberfest.

That being said, I'm not an expert on German beer but my outsider's perspective these are my favorites from each city.

Dusseldorf - Uerige - beer was my favorite here among the others. Fuschen was also a favorite. I didn't care for Kurzer, a bit too modern feeling.

Cologne - Peter's was my favorite by far followed by Malzmuhle where I met with SnowCrash  He even noted that he quite enjoyed it fresh a bit more than expected.

You can also find Gose and Berliner Weisse in both cities if you look at craft beer shops if that is something you want to try. I traded with Snowcrash for a few and found a few others at a shop called Holy Craft in Dusseldorf.

Pssst, that last part was supposed to be our little secret :stuck_out_tongue:. It was a nice meet-up, thanks for the beers and I hope you will enjoy your stay at Drie Fonteinen!

Like, WTF, Bro... Any basic travel guide for Germany will tell you that plastic is not widely accepted. Cash ist Koenig.

    You could have translated König.

They pay the staff a living wage, they have thin margins, so the credit card fees get in the way. That is what was said 20 years ago.

I would have at least expected the places that have the credit card stickers on the window to not have such limitations. I did quite a bit of searching and confirmed that certain classic spots in cologne were cash only but was mixed with the others. But since it wasn't mentioned on here I thought I would make it fairly clear for others planning a similar trip.
