    Its amazing how often this comes up. The Reinheitsgebot still applies for beer brewed in Germany. It's only imported beer that doesn't have to comply.

    Then again, cherry beer was made in northern Germany until at least the 18th century. Because the Reinheitsgebot didn't apply to most of Germany until the 20th century.

    Coming up on a trip to France, Belgium, Denmark, and in Germany to Berlin, Leipzig, Munich and Weihanstephan. I'm feeling like this should be a pretty fantastic beerventure.

    Up till the early 1900s Germany produced as many different beer styles as anywhere else , they also brewed adjunct lagers with rice (where do you think Adolphus Busch got the idea from?) , and then came along the Reinheitsgebot which killed them all off. Bavaria had made the assimilation of the RHG a condition to joining a unified Germany.
