That speaks incredibly poorly to the other entrants in the category. Maybe beer judges enjoy sour patch kids enough to want a beer reminiscent of them, but Oude Tart is nothing like the real Flemish reds and oud bruins made in Belgium. And it's terrible on its own merits.

World Beer Cup judges and the majority of people on beeradvocate and ratebeer disagree with you on the merits.

I'm guessing you like something a lot more mild and tame like Rodenbach? That's cool, I tend to prefer a little more tart and sourness, but I don't think I'd ever call it 'terrible', but to each, his own.

pretty sure the closest i've ever come to true wALEs was a walrus or two. this thread, at least the first couple of pages make it sound like at worst i've been extremely lucky, if not blessed. a couple of examples have been too straight-up whiskey forward, but heck, some regular BWs can be too much for me to sit (more like sift) through, especially in a big ass bomber. i can't recall having a BA beer that had the fortune to make out with the garbage disposal.

some of the 'alleged' atrocities above, i've never even heard of. even though i get shouted down regularly, i strongly believe the barrels & what was in them (originally), how they were treated (originally) as well after the beers entry & storage thereafter all make some difference in the respective finished products. maybe it's just being a booze hound emeritus, i'm much less inclined to buy something from an unfamiliar/less stated brewery, especially if it's a barrel aged iteration & double so if it simply indicates "whiskey BA" or just "barrel aged". i know there is a consensus that believes it's all about a good base beer, barrels are just an addition. i take a slightly different view. my belief is good barrels can help great, decent or perhaps even underwhelming base ales... a helluva lot more than great base ales can help fucked up, abused, leaky barrels. jmho.

That's a stupid guess. I like a Flemish sour to taste like a Flemish sour and have some depth of flavor, not just have an overwhelming sour flavor and nothing else. Also, you should keep in mind that the beer entered in the WBC does not necessarily match the beer you buy in a bottle labeled Oude Tart exactly. And as for the ratings on this site, well, anyone who throws that around as proof of anything instantly loses credibility.

    I agree with this one:
    Big Sky Kriek
I also didn't care for Clown Shoes Luchador en Fuego - started out okay by the end I wanted to puke - drainpoured the last 1/3rd. Just got harsher as it warmed - and I like bourbon forward but no good.

Im guessing you don't like sours, because Beatification, Supplication and the like would beg to differ, but I understand. It took me a while to get into sours.

I bought a bottle of Dogfather, it was almost certainly infected, and the little bit I tried tasted like crap, so I'd be inclined to agree.

I've been planning a mediocre barrel aged beer vertical and this thread caught my eye.

Well sorry man, I figured you were more into something more traditional, as you seemed in opposition to Oude Tart's non traditional take. Plenty of people find depth of flavor in Rodenbach.

The ratings on this site are conclusive proof that you are in the minority on this site. That isn't opinion, that's fact. I never tried to dissuade you from your opinion, I simply noted several indicators that your feelings about the beer were not in conformity with others. It has nothing to do with credibility, as it is objective fact. Credibility takes a hit when you don't read for content, and then try and spin it into something else along the lines of a scarecrow argument.

Yeah, that was probably the most disappointing barrel aged beer I've ever come across. I picked it up in a store and when I saw it I thought "Hot damn! Pinot Noir barrel-aging sounds awesome! Just like Supplication!" And then I tried it and was like "Awwwwwww."

Has anyone let this age for age for a significant amount of time??? Or should I just crack mine open and get it over with?

I remember that beer. Quinn wasnt bad when it first came out, but then that awful flavor took over. Coastal Extreme always seem to have good ideas but they dont always work out. Remember Mark? Coffee Milk stout seems like a perfect idea for an RI brewery...too bad it was infected and almost every bottle was tainted. Kim however was and still is my favorite Newport Storm beer. An 8% abv marzen that drinks like a authentic german fest beer. Whats not to love? Wish they would make it again.

Hold on now bro! We have some great quality brews available out here. Stone, Dogfish Head, and Great Divide all make fantastic imperial stouts. Even a few local Texas breweries make really good ones. We aren't exactly deprived of great beer out here. Just saying lol

Indian Wells is a total fraud, a sham of a brewery, and I wouldn't use any of their beers to try and make a point.
