But the college(s) is a goldmine, those kids drink a lot more beer than many working class cities.

They are getting better slowly but surely. There is a small beer store I used to stop at in Ocean Springs (Hops and Growlers) and he was in the process of converting it to a brewpub when I passed thru last July. Grabbed a growler of his hoppy blonde for the road and it was really good. In fact he is doing so well he ditched the store and upgraded to a new larger building. Miss is just getting a late start due to legal issues, but there are breweries opening up there now. Southern Prohibition, known for their hoppy beers, had the honors of winning Paste Session IPA with their Devil's Harvest. So they are getting there

Yeah, Southern Prohibition is the only brew from MS I've heard of that's getting acclaim.

I'd take Fargo and Grand Forks over where I grew up in Northeastern Arkansas any day of the week. The county where I grew up in AR is still dry, and while there are a few "bars" (e.g. Chili's, Ruby Tuesday's, "Japanese" hibachi places) that will serve alcohol now, you still have to drive across county lines to buy alcohol to take home. And at those places you will be lucky to find a SNPA or Fat Tire that are likely 8 months old.

So I'm currently visiting family in Ukraine for a couple weeks. Even over the last year there has been a stong improvement. Its far from the hop heaven I've grown accustomed to in California, but new local micro and nano breweries are making almost styles, except ba stouts and neipas. That being said, even in the late 2000s and early 2010s all we had was maybe 3 major breweries owned by AB InBev and Co, each making a couple different lagers that all tasted the same, some Stella + Beck's, and a few cheap shelf-type Germans. And Kvass, obviously. This was in a major city -- I imagine that remote less populated regions got less. It certainly felt pretty barren.

Obviously though, the African and Middle Eastern countries you guys mentioned sound way worse. Kinda puts into perspective when we (in the U.S.) complain about not getting some particular brewery or style.

    Thanks-

No one shot at me underwater.

The guys pounding ground in the Middle East while I was poking the holes in the ocean are those who truly sacrificed.

    Cheers!

Yeah, besides the dire beer situation in third-world countries, visitors can't eat anything uncooked, and personal safety isn't a given. We were told that if our embassy van broke down while passing the palace we should hit the deck - apparently had recently not gone well for a tourist family that stopped for pictures. Also, while we were there on one trip, we were ordered to stay in our hotels during the funeral of a college student/protestor shot by police across the street from where we were working. Wisely, the police were grounded too and the military kept order. We drank a lot of Bier Niger that day to cut the tension.

Caribbean islands can get pretty bad... understandable, considering they're... islands. Every island has their own lager (Wadadli, Piton, Presidente, etc.) But its a trade off for being in the Caribbean.

I would say Antarctica, but there have been several BAs with Antarctica as the location in their profile. They must get some beer there.

Some of them have good rum. I had a local beer at the Bahamas Hard Rock, it was OKish. Could have all kinds of imports such as Bud, etc. Hard pass.

Among other places, I've worked in Mouritania, Africa, in South Korea, and in Trinidad. As well as the Antarctic Peninsula, and offshore oil rigs in Gulf of Mexico and North Sea. All those places were pretty bad for beer selection (some are an obvious no brainer why). I remember finding a place on Geoje Island in South Korea that actually had some selection. They even had Fuller's London Pride, when I ordered the bottle there was no date that I could read (that I remember), but I know that label had not been used in many years. I found it funny at the time.
