Between Stumptown, Weathered Ground, Short Story, Bad Shepherd, and Abolitionist, I personally think West Virginia’s beer scene has grown exponentially in the past few years. Perhaps y’all should visit.

American embassies and consulates are an oasis in third-world counties. They like to keep tabs on Americans in-country, so we had many meals there (Niger) - cheap and safe. I don't recall what beer they had, wasn't into craft at the time, but beer and movie night was a nice escape.

Sioux Falls metro area is about 250,000, but yeah houses aren't crammed together like out East. Metro size is great for low crime rate, economy, low costs - and great beer. But then there is winter, where you can sit inside and drink craft...

Sounds like the US deep south prior to the '90's... Only Anheuser Busch and Miller products.

I recently spent a month in India. Having lived there previously, I was hoping that the situation had improved from the dire conditions of old. No luck. You'd think a country that has such an amazing variety of flavors in their food would want something equally good to drink. No. Apparently, they're still completely satisfied with tasteless lagers. I grant you there is now an endless selection of tasteless lagers from around the world, but still, swill is swill. After a month of Kingfishers, I was ready to shoot myself and was resigned to just drinking water. HOWEVER, if you do find yourself in India, be advised that there is something called "Kingfisher Strong" that is a fairly decent beer. For some reason, you can only buy it in shops. No restaurant will carry it. Probably only suitable for reprobates, alcoholics and visiting Americans.

St. Lucia was pretty bleak. They have a state owned brewery that makes Piton Lager and, oddly, Heineken. Dragon Sout and Guinness FE in the grocery stores but in restaurants or resorts it was exclusively the locally brewed stuff. Piton was always skunked but the Heineken draft was potable. Barely.

Schlitz was huge in the South - in the '70s in some years, it was the #1 brewery in sales in AL, MS (over 50% share '72-'74), SC, AR and LA and a close #2 in GA. Pabst had a brewery in Pabst, GA (in the '80s taken over by Heileman) and ran neck and neck with both Schlitz and AB.

In the 1960s, Falstaff was also a big seller in many of the same states - #1 in both AL and MS in the early years of the decade.

Sorry I don't remember the name of the pub, but I had beers and food at a brewpub in downtown Morgantown a couple of times while visiting my son. They had several really good ales. It's been a while, but I recall the IPA and stout were both excellent. I think it was called Morgantown Brewing (clever, yes).

With so much good beer available to the masses right now, we could all do a lot better than trying to celebrate the worst of it. Cheers.

Morgantown is a bit of a drive for you, but they had decent selection in bars and liquor stores,

New Hampshire 9th in number of craft breweries per capita probs doesn't qualify for worst beer scene on planet Earth.

    Southern California is the worst!

Sure, it was hoppin' back in the day, and it still is rather hop cray. Drinking in a converted industrial space seemed "forbidden" and "scandalous" because hey, who knows what kind of risqué activities went down behind the stack of wood pallets, or behind the dumpster in the alleyway. Now everyone does it that a way. If there is a new brewery opening up below Point Conception, you probably already know what it looks like!

If your scene is in in the middle of a bustling cultural intersection, with people and scooters and different languages whizzing by you at hypersonic speeds, and it has good beer, you lucky.

If your scene is overlooking the hills or the streams or the forests or oceans where thinking to yourself sounds loud enough to wake up a sleeping mountain beast, and you have good beer, you lucky.

If you have a watering hole that is burrowed in the basement of a sketchy high-rise with men and women slinging fish and veggies and dazzling knock-offs, and it has good beer, you lucky.

Those are the best kinds of beer scenes...

Maybe not the worst but quite sad would be my recycling bin after a particularly heavy week of drinking

I suppose if you start with 'nothing' then five 'new' breweries = exponential growth?

Just half-kidding. It is indeed good news that there is progress occurring in West Virginia.

    Cheers!
