Worst beer within its style?

Right now, I'm attempting to drink a Natty Greene's Elm Street IPA. I have half a glass left at the moment, and I've been sipping it for the past 30 minutes, so it's quite warm at this point. Every NG beer I've had so far other than this one have been great, but this is by far the worst beer I've ever had from any microbrewery. It's not like any IPA I've had before at all; it has a very rich blueberry-ish flavor/aroma, and I can't taste any hops at all. Of course, Beer Advocate lists it as an "English" IPA (or "English style," seeing as it's brewed here in NC), and I've only had American IPA's up to this point, so I'm not sure if it's just that I'm a total n00b or if the beer really is just different. I'm not really enjoying it like I do with most IPA's though. Maybe it's just not a good representation of IPA's in general (at least I would say).

What's a beer, or what are some beers, that you have had that didn't do their style any justice and/or was a total let-down?

    HaynesJB,

When I lived in NC (Southern Pines) our local grocery store carried natty green's beers and I picked up a 6'er of their IPA one night. Less than impressed.

Stick with Highland and Duck-Rabbit. I really miss being able to drink their beers on a regular basis. Except for one time I had a rabid duck that tasted like having a mouthful of coins. I don't know what the fuck was going on there....

    Cheers.

The DL Geary's London Porter I drank was way too watery for a porter. Just tasted like carbonated water with a bit of coffee thrown in.

Bud Platinum was a huge disappointment. Other beers of the blue-glass-bottle style* have more to offer.

*This is--tragically--not a joke, at least in the eyes of the brewer: Anheuser-Busch described the beer as "a trendy blue-bottle line extension that appeals to a key group of beer drinkers and expands consumer occasions," in its third-quarter earnings report.

Agreed. As far as the blue glass bottle style goes, even Kronenbourg Blanc is better.

Natty Greene's Southern Pale and Old Town Brown are some of my favorite local go-to's, but never again will I have their Elm Street IPA. It's a good thing I got it in a mixed 6 pack though. I had to pour it out, which normally pains me for beer, but I couldn't go any further with it. Now I'm drinking a Sweetwater Road Trip (it's okay, but definitely more drinkable), then I still have some Highland Little Hump Spring Ale and a Victory Hop Wallop waiting on me, so it should be a good finish for the night.

    Cheers!

wow, that weird, i could never find that beer on ba before. i grapped a bottle of this to fill out a six of sngles because i have never had it before.

completely awful. would have been a drain pour, but i dont waste beer, so i just chugged it like a bud light.

that being said, i have never had a good blueberry or any other fruit beer. they just taste so artificial to me

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that the Elm Street that you had was pretty old. In fact I don't think that they are making that beer right now, or at all anymore as they are moving into the Freedom IPA. The Elm Street is usually here and gone several months ago. I used to think it wasn't that bad when it was fresh, kinda reminded me of a 400 lb. monkey from Left Hand! If they are still making it I would re-address it next year. Otherwise I would go with their fun one-offs (Dubbel, Sours, Imp. Stout) or their regular lineup!

I do my best to drink local beers to FLA and most people think either CCB, Dunedin, or Swamp Head (at least when they ask me). Well Jacksonville is having a growth of breweries/brew pubs and I have taken a liking to Bold City (even though all are good decent) and they make an 'E Street Ale' which here on BA is categorized as an Amber and this is the most plain beer ever. I taste a lot of diactyl and overall its just plain to me compared to other Ambers I have had.

It strains credibility to even call it an IPA, but if the brewery's style designation is to be believed, Alexander Keith's is the worst IPA I've ever had.

Love the avatar, I enjoyed Alexander Keith's IPA, but at the time I was working on the railroad drinking Guinness and Heineken. I am sure it would be less pleasant now. Still, I can't say I've had a bottom self blowout to seek the worst of the worst. Just the thought of Troegs' Dreamweaver still leaves a bad taste in my mouth, but I seek out only quality beers now, and haven't had a bad wheat beer since.
