Smell lovely, taste like heaven, but often look like sewage or mud in the glass.

IMO Mongo and Wipeout are really nice looking beers.

It's all about pouring it so the sediment stays in the bottle IMO.
Then drinking it later by itself.

Many so-called craft breweries are in fact quite large concerns with all the skills and expertise required to regularly produce a well finished product.

That's very similar to how Bell's Third Coast Old Ale often looks out of the bottle (only purple instead of brown).

I thought the only Jai Alai I've ever had was gorgeous. I did, however, have a Mikkeller Citra a couple days ago that looked horrible. Murky beer with floaties. I can overlook a bad appearance in the beer, but it didn't taste very good either. I only take pictures of beer that I want to look at again, so nothing of the Mikkeller.

Ugliest beer I've ever seen is Shmaltz (Coney Island) Freaktoberfest. Red food coloring to make the stuff look like bad fake blood, and it doesn't even taste that good.

Glad to hear you liked it! I'll agree that batch turned out particularly ugly, though it sounds like yours may have been even worse than usual. We've made some minor changes to the most recent Berliner batch, both to improve the appearance, as well as provide a more delicate balance to the beer.
Ultimately though, we believe that a non interventionist approach and gentle handling result in more flavorful and particularly aromatic beers. Working with wild yeast and bacteria in everything (ours are not floculent at all), this often means our beer will be cloudy. Its a tradeoff for certain, but appearance is the less important of the three for us. I suspect many of the brewers of the beers pictured here have a similar philosophy, and with that, you will get bottles and kegs with more sediment than others.
I also don't think it's a coincidence that many pictures here are of hoppy beers, as we believe that the fragile hop aromatics are easily lost through filtering and to a lesser extent fining among other methods. Obviously we arent alone in that belief, though it's impossible to make the argument that world class hoppy beers aren't made with various more aggressive techniques as well.

Edit: I neglected to add, the large portion of unmalted wheat in that beer also contributed to the milky cloudiness. Without aggressive steps to remove it, or a very long time to settle or be consumed by the Brett, it's a natural result of the process and ingredients. Again though, we agree, not our prettiest beer!

I never, nor others from what I've noticed, said just because a beer has sediment or looks bad means that it was brewed poorly. I love Jai Alai, but it isn't always the prettiest beer to look at.

Pretty much true, although pretty much all of the darker versions do (and should) look like that.
I can't really fault a beer when it's supposed to look a certain way per the style and intentions. To me you really only have an ugly beer when there are terrific examples of the style that don't look unappetizing. That goes for pretty much anything from Belgian pale ales, to IPA's, to whatever. The might taste and smell great, but as long as "appearance" is a score on BA, they should lose points for it.

Didn't have any floaties that I could tell, but my bottle of DORIS the Destroyer from Hoppin' Frog poured wiht no head at all and looked like dank black water. Still tasty though.

Double Crooked Tree has some pieces floating, but like more of the beers mentioned in this tread taste very good.

Was just gonna post this. I have this weird fondness for Wacko but it looks like the juices you get out of a package of hamburger.
