Would bread crumbs compensate for yeast packets?

I some times find myself without yeast packets and am always eager to try crumbling up a few slices of bread into crumbs, then adding it to juice (or water) and 2 cups a sugar and see if it'll ferment. The reason i'm asking this is because different people tell me bread crumbs would ferment just as well as straight yeast, but i also have people telling me that it would not ferment at all because the bread has been cooked. Any tips?
I'd much rather just by a loaf of bread and use maybe 1 or two slices every time i want to make a batch.

Yeast die at baking temperatures. The friends that told you this don't brew beer, do they?

Sure do that and report back on your experiment. Make sure to do a blind triangle taste test with the control beer that had the package of bakers yeast. Have a large sample of judges, make sure the positive selections prove the experiment was statistically valid. If it is valid, I can save big money on yeast in the future.

Try it and find out! Please report back on your results!

I don't understand how you have all of the other ingredients to brew but don't have any dry yeast on hand.

If it starts fermenting, the it is from the wild, not from the bread, unless the bread sat on the counter and picked up wild yeast.
EDIT: sorry meant wild not dry

Thanks everyone! I will most likely just stick to buying yeast. It's pretty cheap and i don't need to use much of it to brew anyway.

It'll work, but some of the enzymes necessary for fermentation are denatured by the heat of baking. You can replace those enzymes by pitching a sufficient quantity of fresh yeast along with the bread crumbs. One packet of US-05 should do the trick.

"In 2004 at the American Homebrewers Association's National Homebrew Conference in Las Vegas, a pruno competition and judging was held"

Laughed when I read this. Did you add this part to the wiki Seacoastbrewer? I once added false information to a wiki page to win a bet. However I did admit to doing so before payment was made.

That's a negative and it looks like there is a source: http://www.ocregister.com/articles/pruno-303659-lynch-county.html

This is how beer was made thousands of years ago...(with wild yeast...come to think of it, it was all wild in the beginning)
