That's hilarious, that is almost the exact same thing I told him.

I'd check with Port, but my guess is that their draught beer is simply DE filtered and probably stable for a much shorter period of time than that 8 months, even under constant refrigeration. That's an issue above and beyond the quality of the hop character. No way I'd do anything but send it back.

this is why the three tier system sucks. Imagine being able to just order directly from the brewer not based on their inventory and born on date surprises...

I don't think there's a brewer anywhere in the country, even those who flash pasteurize their kegged beers, who'd want their standard (i.e., non-cellarable) beers of ANY style to be that old and still being sold by their distributors.

I'm disappointed to read that. Your reasoning is sound- even if it weren't, the rep shouldn't be leveraging what other customers do to simply disagree with you when they planned to accept the return.

Are you a commercial bar ? If so don't you have an agreement & relationship with your distributor ?

If you are a home bar ? You should have looked at the date when you picked up the keg.

You could save it for a few months to see if it develops into a barleywine!

Yes, I would send it back. Of course, I am not a bar owner. I am a bar and bottle shop supporter, however. And I would expect the bar owner to offer some value in exchange for my hard earned $. You took care of the customer by refusing to serve that brew. There is no value
    in stale servings.
