Heading to Chicago for the 5th time, 2nd time this year for work. In previous visits have hit Revolution, Haymarket, Piece, and various places downtown (Howell and Hood, Jake Melnicks, Milllers Pub, etc). Taking in a Cubs game for the 1st time in Aug. Besides GI Wrigleyville, what other decent places for a pre and post game beer, walking distance from the ballpark?

Look on Beermenus to see what places have on tap and how far you'll have to walk.

Personal suggestions would be Sheffield's, nice patio and lots of good beer options. You can also poke your head in at Replay on the way (it's not on Beermenus but there is a big chalkboard you can see through the window outside). It has 25 taps (usually nothing rare but solid choices) and 8-10 arcade games you can play for free.

Some other good places in the area are easy to get to by using public transit but are a long walk, so maybe consider that for post-game.

Murphy's has a decent craft selection but is a total shit show but is also within pissing distance of the field. still the craft prices aren't bad, probably because they're making all of their money off of the $7 cans of bud light. pints of BGH for $5.50? yes please

headed back down on the redline, you could also hit local option for good food and beer. or delilah's for good beer and weird scene. also atlas brewing.

OP clearly states he's looking for good bars within walking distance to/from Wrigley for pre/post game beers.
Hopleaf and Local Option both have great tap lists but it's about a 2 mile walk from the park. Paddy Longs you're looking at about a mile walk. I'd second going to Sheffields and Murphy's. Like @spicoli00 said Murphy's will be a shit show on game days but it's got a very decent selection at reasonable prices and it's directly outside the entrance to the bleachers in the outfield. My personal opinion would be to do Sheffields and Murphy's for pre and post game.

Another vote for Sheffields. Usually a solid tap list and just outside of the Wrigleyville douche-zone.

Or he could buy a CTA pass and get anywhere in the city within a few minutes. That's what I'd recommend.
Anything around the stadium before and after a game is going to be nuts and probably not enjoyable. Sheffield's is the bomb though.

i completely agree with this statement, but OP is asking for places around the park. maybe he likes hanging out at shitshows. it's something to be experienced once and washed from your mind with tasty suds. What has been seen cannot be unseen, but you can do your damnedest to black it out. The ribaldry and excess in the area I have witnessed on game day is world class, especially for friday day games. I would NOT wear sandals or flip flops.

Thanks for all the suggestions.. I hit Local Option back in early June. Thought it was great. I don't care about shit shows as long as I can get a decent beer and the fans aren't a bunch of A-holes.

If you are willing to make a two mile hoof, The Bad Apple has great food and an incredible list of craft brews. I was there last weekend, on a game day, and it was phenomenal.

Uncommon Ground just opened their new brewery last week. Had the Pale Ale and they had an IPA in tank. The G man( Gingerman) is on the way and may be the least douchey bar in Wrigleyville. They have a decent line up. Both just north of the park on Clark.

Sheffields. Awesome taps and really good BBQ. Nice thing is Sheffields is a few blocks south of the park and most of the "crowds" don't wander that far south. You can enjoy your beers and not be bothered with big crowds pre/post game.

Wait, but I thought you were going to a Cubs game...

I would echo what everyone else has said. Sheffield's. One of the best outdoor spaces in the city and a giant, fantastic beer list. And I honestly find it is not normally too much of a cluster on game day. It's a 2-3 block walk from the park, which seems just far enough to make it not insane.

Agree with all of the above... if you want to enjoy your beer in moderate peace, Sheffield's and Gingerman are your best options within stumbling distance of Wrigley.

Since we are on the topic, any decent beer in the park? I'm sure I'll find the ubiquitous GI stuff and Old Style......not that I consider Old Style decent but it is sort of iconic..

Murphy's Bleachers and Bernie's right next to the park are good options. Sheffield's for sure. It's about a 1/4 mile away from the stadium but the best beer option hands down and the BBQ is great too.

In the park the best you'll do is some standard GI releases.

I live right near Wrigley. Best bets are Sheffields which will generally be jammed after a game. but they have decent bbq and a nice beer garden, so always worth a shot. if you walk over to Southport Lanes you will find a hidden gem in the city. 32 taps, nearly all of them rotate. and also Northdown is pretty close as well. Id avoid murphys and bernies if you are looking for beer. and hopleaf is certainly no walking distance whoever said that. uncommon ground and the Gman are decent options nearby. best beer in the park that i know of is 312 wheat and 312 pale ale. maybe a green line.

They do have green line but need to go to a counter to get it. Beer guys have 312 pale and wheat.
