    Ironically Sip of Sunshine and Heady Topper are ... not really New England Style IPAs, stylistically anyway.

    Odd13 uses clarityferm in their hazy IPAs, IIRC. I'm not entirely sure why, but I do know that it greatly reduced gluten content in the beer.

    As a side note, Odd 13 IMO makes the best NEIPA that comes in 6-pack of cans for ~$10, you can find all over the state without waiting in line or going somewhere special. Codename: Superfan is that beer and it puts most "NEIPA"s to shame.

    Read it just fine. Especially liked the part where you assumed that you had more of a beer than someone else because, "I'm more likely to have consumed many more varieties of the style than you, being here in NE where nearly every craft bar has at least one on tap (and also my having taken lots of regional beer-cations, and attending many bottle and beer shares with cross-country traders)."

    That was awesome.

    I think we can also agree that the shortcuts show clearly (ha ha) in the finished beer. And yes, that beer is good (unless it isn't. Those Sam Adams hazy IPA attempts are awful.)

    Yes, yes it was, drinking all of that beer was awesome. If you're going to twist it all up, so am I. Have fun with that. :slight_smile:

    Nobody's getting upset but you. Just realize that if you think "hop suspensions" cause NEIPAs to be cloudy, you might need to do some reading.

    Nah, I'm not upset. Just being defensive, which was unnecessary. My shitty day doesn't need to be your problem. Backing away from the thread now, having a cherry Berliner Weisse and moving on from being a dick on the internets.

    Sorry about the day. One thing about beer is that it has the capacity to make that day better. Hopefully that's the case with you.

    IBUs as measured with the ASBC test work fine - for the beers that the test was designed for. The amount of absorbed light is the metric. It works fine for clear beers like the light lagers of the 60s.

    When a cloudy beer is measured, it can have high IBUs. When that beer is run through an HPLC, it has been shown that the Isohumulones are low, and those are what are usually associated with IBUs. The polyphenols and proteins that cause the haze drive up the absorbance of the light, causing the higher IBUs in the test.

    I need to listen to Denny and Drew’s podcast on that topic.

    Yes, IBUs can be measured nicely and neatly, but those measures alone do not give accurate information about perceived bitterness of the beverage. Just as is the case with perceived loudness and perceived brightness, it depends, ar least in part, on the context and/or or relative strength.

    New England IPAs should be called Juice Pale Ales (JPA) because it captures the beer's taste, visuals, etc and removes geography from the nomenclature.

    JPA = juicy, hazy, dank
    IPA = bitter

    PS - I had to look up what flocculating meant but it's one hell of a word

    Cheers!

    As I am well aware, both in the beer context, and I was an N&V engineer so I know about noise perception.
