I stopped in at Georgetown Brewing on my way home to Seattle from Olympia today --- traffic was awful and it gave me a good excuse to drop in on G'town for my first-ever visit. I had an empty Laurelwood growler in my truck --- in my growler car seat, of course.

They charged me an extra $2 to fill my growler because it wasn't a Georgetown growler. $2 is no big deal, but it pissed me off anyway. They gave me two reasons: (1) It takes someone away from the till to fill it up and (2) they lose some beer down the drain since they're filling from the tap. I paid my extra $2 and swore never to return, on principle.

I'm so used to the free love and free spirit of Fremont Brewing and their devil-may-care attitude that I thought maybe I shouldn't judge G'town so harshly.

So, let me ask you, my invisible BA friends: Is this extra charge common practice for breweries besides Fremont?

    That's pretty ridiculous...

I have never heard of that extra charge before, ever. Serves you right for going to G'town.

In WA, any sealable can be used as growler. This is just pure Bullshit. I understand they would want to sell the prefilled growlers for convenience, but I don't suspect that they're 3 deep at the bar either.

aren't there growlers pretty cheap though even with the $2.00 extra charge?

Yes. $8 for a Georgetown growler, $10 for a non-Georgetown growler. But, as I stated, it's not the $2 per se.

Georgetown has always charged more for non-Georgetown growlers. Eh.

The only other brewery that has a "Not our growler" policy is Elk's Head in Buckley. They actually take your growler, stick it up on the wall, and give you one of theirs as "punishment."

Aside from the fact that this might be the first, and possibly the last, time that Buckley is ever referenced in a beer-related thread, I have to admit I'd prefer this policy to Georgetown's.

You know, I think Big Time charged me more on a fill of a non-Big Time growler once.

They also "lectured" me on doing a growler fill on a Husky football game day...

It was 10am. I was the ONLY PERSON in the entire place. Hrmph.

I'm a big supporter of Georgetown. Their prices are fantastic in part because they have their method of sharing growlers of their beers down to a science. Buy your first growler, then going forward swap it out. No big deal. Go in, drop off your old growler, pick up one already filled.
I like it the way it is. Doesn't bother me at all and I hope they don't change just because a few of my BA friends were piqued.

This is painfully stupid, I wonder how many other people have had the same reaction, that paying the extra $2 is not a big deal, but the principle for this snottiness is enough to make one not return. I don't think I could have kept a straight face if I had received the explanation of being away from the till & beer down the drain.

Fremont has the same process. You buy their growler, then swap it out when you want a new one. They also fill non-Fremont growlers FOR THE SAME PRICE as the Fremont growler fill. Plus, Fremont's prices are exactly the same as Georgetown's for their standard line-up --- $8. So, I call BS on Georgetown.

Ok. We'll agree to disagree. Not important to me. Good on Fremont for not charging extra. For what it's worth, Georgetown isn't the only one who does that. Cascade in Portland charges a penalty for non-Cascade growlers.

This annoys the hell out of me. I had a very similar experience, being one of a just a couple people in there and them telling me it's $2 extra to have one of the employees standing there doing nothing at the time fill my growler. It definitely isn't the price that bothers me, it's the process, principle, and attitude they had about it when I questioned the price.
I'm a big fan of Georgetown, but I won't fill growlers there. I sure as hell don't need another growler sitting around my house to be used only when I want their beer. It's their choice to run the growler fills that way, and it must work for them...so they won't miss my business.

Once you have a growler of theirs, the exchange is no big deal, but I'll agree that their policy design pretty much assures everyone's first time there is a bit jarring.

My bigger gripe is with their choice of clear growlers. Nothing says "I care about beer's light-sensitivity and the taste of my product" like a clear growler.

The thing that gets me is the name on the growler/type of growler has no bearing on either of those reasons. Those two things will happen whether they're filling one their growlers or a non-Georgetown growler. Weird and stupid.

I know Georgetown is an important, long running brewery in Seattle, but man do I find their beers boring.

I assume, but don't know for sure, that they are counter-pressure filling their growlers in the brewery rather than from the tap in the taproom. If my assumption is correct, it is more efficient (time-wise as well as minimizing beer loss) to simply swap an empty G-town growler for a pre-filled G'twon growler.
