Love both, but I have to give the nod to Wulver. It's better by a decent margin and available year round (in certain spots) with no silly bottle limits. The only thing holding me back is the price point, but that's what pay days are for!

Everyone should try both given the opportunity

    Thread take away..

Wulver tastes slightly better than Backwoods Bastard.

Wulver costs significantly more that Backwoods Bastard.

In the end Backwoods buries another bloke in the swamp. Cool story though.

Probably an apples-to-oranges comparison but I would rather buy a 4 pack of BB for the same price as one "bomber" of Wulver.

Don't get me wrong, they are both extremely good beers, but IMO....the two beers are quite similar in taste. For that reason alone, I will easily take the value of the BB over the very slight difference in the smoother taste of the Wulver.

But then again, I am from MI, so I cannot discredit the homerism argument you brought up early in the thread.

So for that...cheers my friend! Both great beers, no one can argue that!!!

I've had BB many times but Wulver only once. They are pretty similar to me but I preferred BB, thought it was a cleaner tasting beer. Also BB is half the price which, while not reflecting the beer's flavor, does take into account why I've only had Wulver once.

I point that sort of thing out to customers all the time. When a someone doesn't have time to hear out my suggestion, because sometimes ya don't have time, it often goes like this:
    "$26 for a four-pack?! No, thank you!"
They turn and head towards the register.
They walk out with a smile on their face...
    And a $15 22oz seasonal release.

In my area Wulver is $6 a single or $24 a 4 pack. I just picked up a 4 pack BB for $15.99 a piece which equates to $4 a single.

I had a 2013 Wulver and a 2013 Backwoods Bastard within the past couple weeks and I rated Backwoods Bastard a little higher. Of course, I drank the Wulver after a Black Note, so I'm not sure the comparison was quite fair. Both are excellent beers that I would love to have again. Unfortunately, Thristy Dog doesn't have distribution in my area.

I can't possibly pick from between them. I've only had Wulver once, so it's pretty difficult to put it into perspective against a beer I've had fresh, with 3 months on it, with 6 months on it, with a year on it...yeah. Wulver was definitely a special beer, but I don't want the "rare" factor to influence my perception of it being objectively better than Backwoods, which absolutely blew me away the first time I had it.

Short answer: they're both great, and I refuse to pick a winner. :flushed:

I prefer Backwoods to Wulver, but both are excellent. And let's not forget about Alesmith's BA Wee Heavy... Sooo good.

I suppose I prefer Backwoods right now because I had one just the other night. If I had a Wulver tonight, my opinion may be different. They're both phenomenal beers, though.

God knows I love how heated these matters of opinion get with some folks on here

It stays on pretty steady rotation at the brewery from what i can tell. I more or less meant the most recent batch being distributed to stores. I did not care for the barrel blend on the last bottle release so I've been leaving those bottles sit on the shelves.

I think both are fantastic beers, but I probably give the edge ever so slightly to BB. However, Wulver is on the shelves in my area pretty much year round, and that is definitely worth something/some bonus points in favor of Wulver. I could probably still find some 4 packs of '14 BB around me if I really tried, but within a couple of weeks (or less) it will definitely be gone for good until this time next year.

I loved Backwoods a few years ago but I haven't had it in awhile. Wulver is very nice- but I rated Backwoods higher. I have a bottle of backwoods to crack open soon to tell. My husband thinks Wulver is one of the best beers he has ever had.

Actually had the opportunity to try these side by side last night. Both 2014- the Wulver on-tap and the Backwoods Bastard in a bottle.

Qualitatively the Wulver highlighted more dark fruit notes than Backwoods and was much hotter and more astringent in alcohol. Backwoods was much sweeter, stickier, with big notes of caramel, molasses, and sweet bourbon flavor.

Subjectively- both beers were very good but Backwoods was just in a different league. My ratings having each separately hold true to my side by side impressions-Wulver with 4.24 and Backwoods with 4.45. The Wulver also improves greatly with 6-12 months on it with the alcohol astringency calmed down a bit. My husband agreed that the Backwoods was better but loved both.
