I've never had a beer from West Virginia. A buddy of mine is headed to WV in a week or two. I want him to bring be something back. I also don't want to make him do a lot of searching for me. What would be an easy-to-find and good WV beer for him to grab for me?
Where abouts in WV is he going? Here is a list of the top beers in WV, which is a pretty small amount of beers http://www.beeradvocate.com/lists/state/wv/ Mountain state brewing is pretty easy to find, all the Wal-Mart's around me carry cans of the coal miners daughter and the Seneca Indian pale ale
Yes, where in WV will he be? My home state is FINALLY starting to figure out the entire Craft Beer phenomenon. Slowly but surely. Some really good suggestions right off the top of my head... Mountain State Brewing Coal Miner's Daughter Oatmeal Stout Greenbrier Valley Brewing - Devil Anse .... EXCELLENT IPA Greenbrier Valley Brewing - Mothman Black IPA Bridgebrew Works - Mountain Mama Pale Ale Big Timber Pale Ale Big Timber Porter
Mountain State is the most widely distributed but they make poor beer. Others are better, such as Bridge and Greenbrier, but their distro even within the state is limited. Look for Big Timber out of Elkins. Those lads know what they're doing.
Straight from a brewery would be the easy answer. Some are starting to see distribution as others have mentioned, but like with most distribution I feel the better offerings are from the source itself. There are a few breweries now up and running throughout the state with another handful or so in the planning stages. WV is finally starting to get the hang of this. I would probably lean more towards the Big Timber stuff myself if you are going to pick up something that is easily available. I use that term somewhat loosely. I had their porter the other night and though it was well done.
I agree Big Timber is excellent and readily available. I prefer the IPA vs the pale ale EersandBeers. I don't consider Devil Anse and excellent IPA but may need to try it again? Bridge Brew very good as well as Chestnut in Morgantown. H2P!
Here's what he's bringing back for me: Greenbriar Wild Trail Pale Ale Greenbriar Mothman Black IPA Morgantown Blonde Morgantown IPA
The Morgantown Brewing company stuff is solid if not amazing. The Blonde is easy drinking and the Zack Morgan IPA is decent as well. It's been a little while since I've had the Greenbriar Wild Trail, but I remember it being pretty good. I've bought a couple six packs of the Mothman and find to be a tasty representation of the style.
