Currently available by the glass during Max's 3rd annual Italian Beer Festival. I think this beer normally retails for around $50 for a 16 ounce bottle, but during the festival, 5 ounce pours are going for $9 a glass of the 2004 vintage.

IMHO, it's worth every penny. Just an incredible beer from Birrificio Le Baladin.

(they have the 2006 silver and 2006 Xfume for the same price)

Also tried this yesterday and thought it a very good vintage barleywine and was glad I tried it. It reminded me alot of some vintage JW Lees I've had, enough that I doubt I'll pony up those prices for glass or bottle again, we did ask, wouldn't sell a bottle. Another world class event from Casey and friends "Livin' The Dream". Thought the Italiano Tipo Pils Zymatore, Troll Palanfrina Zymatore and Amiata Contessa were some standout drafts.

My guess is that they wouldn't have known what price to put on a bottle for the fest. I know $9 for a five ounce pour seems high, but I think the bottle size is 16.9 ounces, and I believe it retails in the $45 to $50 range. I'm not positive, but I think the bar price for a bottle was at least $70 (and it might have been $90 - I can't honestly recall at the moment). So the by the glass price actually represents an incredibly good deal.

I drain poured the bottle I had. It was flat as sin. It opened without a sound, and you could have poured this on the pavement from 2 stories up without generating any kind of foam/head. Very disappointing. This, to me, was another shining example of how the vast majority of beer simply does NOT get better over time. This was a 2007 bottle. Perhaps this was the way it was supposed to taste and it's simply not my thing...but I'm not getting the allure on this one.

We didn't expect to get a bottle we just bust Jason's balls asking for stuff we not supposed to have, gotta keep him on his toes. Sometimes it pays off. When I get into high abv, vintage stuff, especially barleywines, I shift into port / sherry mode as that's more of what those beer's remind me of. Rarely would I want to drink more than 6 ozs. The beer tasted great though.

My understanding is that the beer is made that way (still). It's not supposed to have any carbonation.

I've tried all of the Xyauyu beers over multiple vintages. They have all been completely still (no carbonation). All that aside, I don't think there's any beer that is going to appeal to everyone. If you take a look at the top rated beers on BA, you'll see a number of low reviews from folks whom I'm convinced honestly did not care for the beer. It's unfortunate you didn't care for the bottle of Xyauyu you purchased, especially as it's a pretty expensive beer.

@ DrBier... the Silver version of this beer was very, very port like. IMHO, the beer had more in common with a fine bottle of vintage or tawy port then it had with any beer I've ever had. The beer really seemed to blur the lines between what is considered beer and wine.

Yeah...I wish I'd have enjoyed it too. It, however, was just like the 750mL bottle or Bourbon Barrel Angel's Share I had to dump. I need carbonation. Flat beer just isn't my gig.

The Xfume is pretty spectacular stuff. I'd really like to try the Scotch barrel variant as well.

that's an expensive drain pour. i can't see paying that kind of money on a beer without researching the shit out of that beer so that wouldn't happen.

For anyone actually looking to do a little research before spending their hard-earned money on a bottle of this, scope the B. United page...a lot of useful notes on there (details on process, spirit comparisons, etc).

I remember initially thinking a bottle solo would be absurd. I ended up drinking 3 glasses (5 oz each), and I guess I answered that question, with the XFume being my favorite. IMO, this is what the Bruery should attempt to get their anniversary beers to be.

Never before in my life have I had a stronger desire to be a kitchen sink or a toilet bowl. Out of curiosity, do you drink any spirits/still wines/ port?

Some wine. No port. I'm more of a scotch and whiskey fan when I drink spirits, and that's none to frequently. I love barleywines too, but this one just...I dunno. It damn near repulsed me. It tasted almost like some sorta syrup. Thin, flat... Couldn't do it.

I wonder if you got an off-bottle, 'cos this beer definitely isn't thin. If so, that sucks. Hopefully I find an extra $20 to help me justify splurging on a bottle at some point

Does anyone have a 2004 bottle of copper lying around at a local store? Cause I'd be interested. Had a bottle a few months ago, and it was amazing!

Not that I've seen, but given the price and scarcity, it's not something I'm typically on the look out for. That being said, Max's has an off premise sale licence, so you could always buy a bottle there (I'm fairly certain they still have some). I think they'll give you a break on the usual bar price for a bottle, but I'm sure it will still be pretty spendy. You could give them a call if you think you'll be in the area (or just stop by the bar and ask).

I see the gold version around from time to time, but other than at Max's, I can't remember seeing the 2004 copper version anyplace (at least not recently).

    Good luck.

"The bottle when is opened remains unaltered and can be even drunk and appreciated within a long time. "
Question: so it's kind of like Utopias? I can open it, drink some, recap it and visit it again later without any problem to the beer?

I think so, though I think this is all relative. I think the beer loses something over time, and I'd still say that's it's best freshly opened, but yeah... my understanding is that you can have a bottle of this open for some time and it will still be very enjoyable. Also, like Utopias (I believe), this beer is actually best served at cellar temperature, as it tends to lose something if it's served too cold.

    Pretty much.

Though, I'm curious to know if anyone has actually recorked it for an extended period of time (>1 year). My experience was only over a couple of months so there wasn't a drastically noticeable change in the quality between the rather infrequent pours (for good or bad).

I'd even go so far as to say room temp...I tried a slightly chilled pour once and picked up all sorts of plastic-y weirdness. This seemed to slowly dissipate as it warmed up to ~70f.
