Yakima "Experimental Grapefruit" hop?

    Has anyone brewed anything with this yet? I recently brewed a batch of my mixed-ferm grisette and incorporated it into the boil (late) and I'm planning on dry hopping with it as well. Initially, I get a really intense Columbus/Chinook aroma and flavor, but with more citrus fruit. Any success or failure stories?

    I've brewed up 6 batches (either single hop or mixed with others) of Experimental Grapefruit IPAs/Pales and I think the hop acts almost exactly like Columbus. Bitters almost exactly like it and had almost the exact flavor and aroma profile to me (with slight more citrus, but not really grapefruit). I say treat it like the CTZ's to not be disappointed. Glad to have only spent $7 a pound for it personally, but wouldn't spend more than any other CTZ for it.

    Most "experimental hops" have numbers...??? The price point is enticing :slight_smile:

    Only from certain farms, but not all...Yakima Valley has a big selection of both named and numbered.

    Don't know what the 07270 means but I can offer that these hops are AA 15.5% and not between 19-20% as listed. I just used 2 oz of some from them this weekend in my IPA. Not sure why it's listed incorrectly.

    For all hops, the alpha acid % changes with every harvest. Check your packaging for the exact % so you can adjust your recipe appropriately. The number is the code for the hop before it is named...happens to all new hops.

    Understood. They could easily keep the website current to reflect the harvest each season. Seems a little lazy that's all. No big deal in the end though.

    This is how all hops are listed on almost every website...they give a range and then the exact % is on each bag. Pretty standard really.

    My only gripe was the fact that it did not fall within the range. 15.5% with a range of 19-20% listed.

    It's a new hop, you could expect their numbers to be off until they have more experience with it themselves. AA falling outside of the stated range is fairly common as well. You'll realize that the more you brew...these are plants that are affected by yearly weather and environmental changes and that affects the AA%, not products produced on an assembly line that are always identical.

    I would say you are more forgiving and understanding then me. I have bought many lbs of hops over the last 5 years of brewing and never seen that happen before. I completely understand crop variation.

    Honestly, I never even worry about IBUs for my IPAs. I just found it odd that they didn't update their site once they saw this years levels. Sorry to hog the thread with that nonsense. I'll report back on how I liked them after.
