(It's pronounced "Yorkpa") In a week, I am heading to Gettysburg for a camping trip, then driving to York on Sunday morning for a USA Hockey Coaching Clinic. Are there any bottle shops in York or near York that are worth checking out? Are stores in PA still closed on Sundays (I moved ~4 years ago, and remember this being a thing)? Keep in mind that I live in MD, which doesn't get Bells or Founders, so even a bottle shop that carries Two Hearted would be worth checking out for me. Thanks!
No way you can drive over to York via Harrisburg? That would greatly increase your odds of finding some good stuff to take home (Al's, Wegmans... but you know all that). Otherwise, you might give Vito's pizza and beer a whirl. While their draft list is nothing to get too excited about, they have a fairly large cold box area with a decent selection of beer to go (Bells and Alesmith, as I recall; not sure about Founders). You won't find anything particularly rare, but they should have two hearted, among other things. http://www.vitospizzaandbeer.com/beers Good luck!
Thanks! Maybe I'll do dinner there. I would stop in H-burg or somewhere else, but the clinic starts early on Sunday morning and lasts all day. (Nevermind. They are closed Sundays!)
Probably coming in on 30 so you could check out DJ Westgate distributor behind West Manchester Mall, minutes off 30, should have cases of both Bells & Founders reg offerings. Only other Distributor worth checking out would be Cape Horn in Red Lion, best selection in York and do get specialty cases. Bottle shops include Quick 6 on W. Market, small respectable selection. Holy Hound Taproom has a small(~40) but quality bottle selection. Working east towards 83 if that's how you're headed back to MD. There's another Quick 6 on Mt. Rose Ave with a larger selection, a little pricey but you'll probably find some stuff you're interested in that don't hit MD, Terrapin, Alesmith and an asst. of W PA stuff. Not far off of Leader Heights exit of 83 is BeerMongers (don't get excited John there' no Apex across the street), this is a new place offering about 10 taps and an advertised 800 bottles. I found their pricing very high. Bring a growler or two as all the above offer growler sales. Hope you find something fun for the holidays.
Thanks Doc! I will eventually choose one of those places to swing by, and hopefully find a couple goodies.
"don't get excited John there' no Apex across the street" Pity that... I would have told him to go there (both places in fact). Almost everything in the store and everything on tap would be stuff he couldn't get back in Md. (and he'd be very happy about the prices as well)
Beer Mongers is half bottle shop, half bar..prices mostly the same unless its a happy hour special or something. So a certain beer (for lets say 4.50 draft) may be a good deal if sitting at the bar, but a total rip off if buying as a single bottle to take home sans-ambiance. Its annoying. Also, the Giant on E Market street has some overpriced Two Hearted @ like 12.50 I believe. Check the date.
Wish I had known about half those places when I went to school out there...Quick 6 on Market was my go to.
