We're going to be in Yorkshire and the Lakes district at the end of the month. Was wondering what breweries
I should keep an eye out for. Looking forward to trying a lot of real ales . From what I've seen, some pubs have a rather intimidating number of taps, so could use some guidance. Cider recommendations would be helpful also.
    Cheers ; Bill

    Lake District:
Hawkshead NZPA on cask is to die for

Hardknott Brewery, their Azimuth, Infra Red and Black IPA are available in Morrisons stores. I love their high ABV offerings.

Jennings Brewery, on the traditional side, I have a soft spot for their Snecklifter

Coniston brewing Co. Grab a bottle or two of the No 9 barley wine and a pint or three of XB at the Black Bull

You will no doubt happen upon a Booths supermarket in any of the bigger towns in the Lakes. Best supermarket range of beers in the UK without a doubt.

CAMRA Cumbria (try saying that five times fast after some Lakeland hospitality)

Whereabouts in Yorkshire will you be?

A short but interesting write-up by Evan Rail:

    22. Yorkshire, England

A photogenic (and historic) ale trail.

The sprawling northern county of Yorkshire is becoming a big destination for beer lovers, thanks to a recently published guidebook called “Great Yorkshire Beer” and a renewed interest in historic breweries like Samuel Smith (founded in 1758) and Timothy Taylor (from 1858). Spend an evening crawling through the Fat Cat, the Kelham Island Tavern and other award-winning pubs in Sheffield — recently called Britain’s best beer city by the connoisseur Adrian Tierney-Jones — then travel to Leeds, whose compact center is home to the Victoria Hotel, the Cross Keys and other public houses that pull pints on traditional hand pumps. A final stay in the photogenic city of York offers a Tudor-style pub at the end of every cobbled lane, as well as modern beer temples like York Tap, Pivni and the House of Trembling Madness. — EVAN RAIL

Yorkshire, all of Yorkshire that is, has some of the best breweries in the UK (& the world). Although Sam Smiths is better known to Americans it doesn't get much praise over here, it's rather anachronistic in its approach & Sir Humphrey is legend. But when you consider we have Timothy Taylors, multiple CBOB winner at GBBF, Magic Rock, Brass Castle, Great Heck, Yorkshire Dales, Summer Wine, Elland, Northern Monk... the list goes on, we have well in excess of 150 active breweries. http://www.quaffale.org.uk/php/countymenu/C
As for Cider, as long as it's served via a beer engine or drawn direct from the (often plastic) barrel you should be OK.

Its not no, its now turned into a 20's style jazz bar apparently! I agree it wasnt bad in there, just not in the greatest of places to attract enough trade for its target audience i dont think. Still plenty of other thornbridge owned places of a similar vibe open though

Thanks for the replies, looks like I've got my work cut out for me. Aye, we're spending two days in Otley attending the CLA gamefair, one day in York, 3 days in Keswick exploring the Lakes region ,then a stop in Dublin to visit friends.

I live in York but I reckon Aye's post has covered all of the relevant pubs, so anything I might add would be superfluous. If you want to drink York beer, I would recomment the Three-legged Mare (York brewery pub). Trembling Madness, the York Tap and the Hop would also be excellent choices for good beer. Trembling Madness is also a well-stocked bottle shop, in case you want to take something away with you....

Not much to add from what was mentioned for Cumbria.

If you see Fyne ALes, try the Jarl for a hoppy beer, the Maverick for a malt focused beer.
