Me and my wife are heading up there tomorrow for a wedding this weekend. Looking for some recommendations of local places to drink, beers to try or even some breweries to go to. We will have a car so can travel within reason. We are from TX so not sure where we need to try.
Nothing that I know of in Yorktown area but if you drive 20 mins up 64W you get to Williamsburg. Virginia Beer Company, Alewerks, Billsburg Brewery and Amber Ox / Precarious Beer Project are all solid breweries. If your wife is into shopping at all Aleworks has a satellite tap room (no brewing on site yet) at the outlets pretty much right across from where their main brewery is located. Dog Street Pub is a good spot for food / beers and they have an adjoining bottle shops called Hair of the Dog that is probably the best in that area. Drive 20-40 minutes in the other direction (64E) towards Newport News/Hampton and there are a few other breweries. I have not visited any of them or been in that area in a while but hear good things about Oozlefinch, Tradition and Bull Island. Not much north of Yorktown on 17 but Gloucester Brewing Company did open just a few weeks ago and would also be 15-20 minutes away. Also have not visited so not sure of their beer quality but I like to promote the new breweries to help get foot traffic in the door. I live a few hours away so not sure what is available locally but if you are on facebook try Hampton Roads Beer Forum for suggestions from locals.
I have. Are they not that good? I really have not heard a lot about the breweries in that immediate area but those are the ones I recall hearing positive feedback about. Maybe they aren't......Have not been myself so can only go on what others have said. I was trying to think of the person on BA that I see post quite a bit and lives down there but was drawing blanks. I am guessing that was you now.
haha, well I don't actually live on the peninsula, I'm on the southside (VB area) but I have been to Tradition when I had to go to NN. I was half joking around, but I personally would not recommend Tradition to anyone, it was pretty bad when I visited.
Not sure how much free time you'll have, but Richmond isn't far from Yorktown - we live in RVA and do day trips to Yorktown, Williamsburg, Jamestown all the time. Probably a ~50 minute drive. Not beer-related, but tons of great history in the Yorktown, Williamsburg, Jamestown area to take advantage of during your visit.
