So pumped for tomorrow! So many good beers, not pumped for the rain though...

So earlier I mentioned that PtY was noticeably off this year, and several people I've talked to have agreed with me. A reputable source told me that the beer is affected by the Simcoe/Amarillo shortage, and while I can't confirm or deny it officially, it makes sense to me, and I'm just wondering if anyone else heard the same.

I'm still going to Monk's on Monday, but I'm definitely not getting a PtY...$15 or even $10 for a 6oz. pour is not even remotely worth it. But I'll still be contributing to the charity in my own way.

Agreed. Very noticeable, although I hadn't heard about any hop shortage and am / would be surprised if a hop as ubiquitous as simcoe or amarillo was scarce enough to affect such a small batch. On the hop side I felt the bitter was there, but the aroma was markedly different. The color was more golden with less tawny / orange. I also felt the underling malt profile was off and the mouthfeel / FG was different. I'm used to yearly variations in the unicorn IPAs, both on QC and alpha acid drift year over year, but I felt that if someone gave me that beer, PtE, and FW Double Jack (which I drank when I got home the night I had PtY), and asked me to pick out PtY, based on how it was in previous years, I would have had some trouble.

Yeah, good point...I don't know if the shortage would've truly effected it, being a small batch; but still, it's just not the same, and not nearly as good/distinctive.

I'll hop on the "drink local" train and once again recommend Williamsberg Bitter Valentine.

Yeah, it's been around a lot lately on tap and in bottles. Well, in the suburbs, at least, but a buddy of mine said he saw it a couple nights ago at...I forget where he said he was, but it was in the city. I know it's not "local local," but well, Nugget Nectar, there you go. :stuck_out_tongue:

My buddy did a drive-by of Capone's this morning at ~9:45. He was planning on going, but the line was already stretching around back, and from the picture he sent I could count about 40 people. So the line was possibly already bigger than the amount of PtY available. And that's with the murkiness of whether they were going to open at 10:30 or 11:30. Fuck that.

There should have been over 70 pours, more if they were doing 8oz or less.

I'm sorry, I meant that there were at least 40 people that I could see from his picture which was only the part of the front of the restaurant. I guess we'll find out if everyone that was in line actually got a PtY.

For the most part, everybody got some. The Troegs Scratch was a superior beer in the end.

Me and my buddy got shafted. People in front of us got last one. The superb selection more than made up for it though

I had a great time at Capone's today, got in line early, got my ticket, and everything ran pretty smoothly. Bummed I missed out on the Troegs Scratch beer, but there was plenty of other hoppy goodness to be had. Looking forward to Monk's on Monday

Is there still a lot of good stuff on at Capone's or has it mostly all kicked?

Really? I was quite underwhelmed with the Troegs, there was no balance for me. PtE on the other hand was great, the finish was unmatched

The Troegs Mango Triple IPA was my favorite beer of the day. As of about 1 hour ago at least the following three had kicked: Pliny The Elder, Hill Farmstead Edward, Troegs Mango Triple IPA. PTY was noticeably different this year. Much drier, much thinner in body, not nearly as much nose, lighter in color, etc. I heard a rumor that Chinook was subbed into the recipe due to the "shortage" of the usual ingredients. I will not be calling out of work Monday to go to Monks for more of it.

As always, a big thanks to Matt and the rest of the Capone's staff for all of the hard work that went into this event.

That was...one of the best times I've ever had. Seriously great group. Thanks to everyone at our table at the bar, and to those in the back room that shared their wonderful beer. It was a helluva day.

We were in town from DC and I commend Capone's for conducting one of the more well-run events I've attended. Got our PtY, PtE, and HF Edward without difficulty. We were also impressed by the local offerings (Victory Ranch, Troegs Scratch, Weyerbacher Uniform, AleWerks Bitter Valentine) and Old Raspy on nitro was delicious. Got some nice goodies from the bottle shop too. Good job Philly, we'll be back soon!
