Oh yeah, I almost forgot but was just reminded on facebook. Khyber moved up their date (it was previously reported as 3/28). They are selling tickets starting on Sunday 3/4 at 5pm (in-person only) and tapping it Wed. 3/7 at 11am. It's a charity event as well with all proceeds going to the Free Library of Philadelphia.

RE: knowing how many pours you'll get from a sixtel.

Just take whatever number you think you can pour and hand out LESS tickets than that. If more is available then great!

Personally I prefer the method of not announcing it ahead of time.

I actually think most places do that (or try to do that). It's not as if there'll be any problem selling the leftovers should there still be beer left after all the ticket holders have gotten their beer. Some places (the drafting room for instance last year) let the staff drink whatever is left over once the place closes at night. A very nice thing to do IMHO, though I can also see where a beer bar would want to try to sell every last drop.

I was there that night. Scoats started giving out the tickets at 7pm, there were about 45 of us downstairs, everyone got a ticket if they wanted one, Scoats then went upstairs to give out the rest, about 7:20pm Scoats came back to the 1st floor and showed that he had about 6 tickets left. you say you were there at 7 and did not get a ticket, them shame on you.......I need not say anything more............

It does seem that the places who handle it that way have the fewest complaints from customers and probably the least amount of headaches. Seems like a win/win.

Whoa, wait a minute. It's pretty easy to know how many pours you are going to get out of a sixtel. The beer will be tapped almost constantly once you start so no chance for foam to slow down the pours or lose beer to foaming. If you give 10 ounce pours you have 64 glasses, maybe 1 or 2 less. 12 ounce pours will give you 53 glasses, maybe minus 1 or 2. So sell 60 tickets for 10 ounce pours and 50 tickets for 12 ounce pours then perhaps use a small wait list.

I don't think it's all that hard to figure out.

I agree wholeheartedly. You guys who are going to stand in line for hours in the cold/rain for this are nuts. It is a very well made IIPA, but not worth that kind of trouble. No beer is. Learn to brew your own, and you can have gallons of it on hand all the time for about about $1.25/12oz glass. Vinny has made the recipe widely available.

I first tried PtY in 2005 on tap at the Boathouse in Conshohocken. No lines, no limits, full 12oz in tulip glasses, NO HYPE. Very good beer...miss those days. *sigh*.

My friend and I got tickets at 7 and they ran out of beer at the pouring...how much clearer do I have to make this. We were not the only ones turned away, this was not just an unlucky back end situation. As you described above, Scoats gave out to tickets to everyone and their mother, there was no intention of clearly delineating who gets some/who does not. The way he gave out tickets, we should have been shotgunning PTY or doing kegstands.

I just have to say the picture you paint is not how I saw it. Scoats knew how many pints he could pour and had tickets for each - he saved tickets for people who might have wanted one and didn't get one. There was no intention of clearly delineating who gets one or not cause there shouldn't be - but by having the tickets the goal was to ensure those that wanted to get some did. I hear your frustration. You had a ticket, didn't get beer.

Did you wait too long and not turn in your tickets and they happened to pour a few more pints thinking everyone had gotten their share? I am sorry to hear you feel this way about Grey Lodge - who in my experience always run events very well, and do their best to serve us. But, posting in a random internet thread venting never helps - and if you didn't raise your issue to the bartendars or Scoats Tuesday night, maybe giving them a chance to make the situation right - I don't think you should complain, having not given them a chance to do anything.

Smellody. Your post is unusually lucid and rational. Are you sure you're in the right forum. :-)

No, it was clearly a "your yuppie filth does not belong here" vibe. I don't give a damn. Tornado in SF did the same thing to me for 2 months before they accepted my group, but we kept coming back because they have RR on tap all the time and $4/pint for PTE/BP before 5PM and on weekend - so I dealt with their kick you in the face/we have glory holes in the bathroom vibe. Eventually things got better. I'm not going to stand in line in Philadelphia and beg for a $10 beer in a shot glass. You get me and my yuppie filth money once out here and if you suck then I'll take my beer money elsewhere (e.g., Capone's, MT, K&K, etc. - where I have never been slighted).

Oh, I was pissed off at first but I really don't care as you learn through mistakes - I'm planting my ass next to a keg of Edward tomorrow. Hope to hand off $50 to Matt and say keep pouring until its gone.

I just have to say a few more things, then I'm done. I am not getting sucked down the rabbit hole of defending something to one person's ranting. 1. It's just a beer.; 2. The "your yuppie filth does not belong here" vibe? Really? My friends and I are as yuppie as they come. We have NEVER felt unwelcomed there. Grey Lodge is as open as they come - and a testimony to our city's great beer culture since it's not the just "yuppie" crowd there for the good beer.

If you were throwing the vibe that you are here in your words at the bar then maybe you were unwelcome. And honestly as a patron of the Lodge if you decide to go somewhere else because of one event, that's your loss - not theirs.

Oh and to get this thread back on topic - I didn't see this link shared so I'll do it. Philly Tap Finder Blog and Foobooz are tracking the PtY tappings.

    Cheers!
