Hi BA and Happy New Year to everyone,

I don't know how many of you keep a log of the beers you consume. I decided to start keeping track of my beer consumption at the beginning of this year, simply because I like to look at stats but also because I wanted to learn about my beer-drinking habits. So here are my stats for 2017. Please feel free to share your own stats as it would be very interesting to see the diversity in the ways BAs consume their beer.

Total number of beers consumed: 542
    Unique beers: 459
    Unique breweries: 277
    Total Cost: $1633

    88.4% were ales.
58% were from bottles, 31% from cans, and 11% on draft.
    Average ABV: 6.59%

Top Countries (total beers/unique beers): USA (370/304), Belgium (56/44), Germany (15/14), England (13/12), Greece (12/12).

Top US States (total beers/unique beers): PA (72/60), CA (47/41), NY (30/28), IL (29/19).

    Total Number of Countries: 36
New Countries: 7 (Indonesia, Lebanon, New Zealand, Portugal, Switzerland, Virgin Islands and Australia - had Aussie brands of beer before, like Foster's, but never a beer that was actually brewed down under until this year).

    Total number of States: 39
New US States: 7 (Alabama, Kansas, Mississippi, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming and Hawaii - had Kona before but was brewed in NH so didn't count. This time I got some actual Hawaii-brewed beer).

Total styles sampled this year: 86
New Styles: 9 (Biere Brut, Braggot, English Barleywine, Kvass, Roggenbier, Sahti, Scottish Gruit, Wheatwine, and Smoked Beer - including a Grodziskie, which should be a style in itself). Now I have sampled all 104 BA styles!

Most Consumed beer: Melvin IPA and La Cabra Hipster Catnip (5 of each)
Most Consumed brewery: Tired Hands (20)
Most Consumed Styles: IPA (92), DIPA (63), APA (43), Saison (33)
Month with most beers: December (72). Month with least beers: May (18)
    Number of drainpours: 18

    Highest rated new beers:
    1. Del Borgo Genziana
    2. Westvleteren 12
    3. Hill Farmstead Dharma Bum
    4. Toppling Goliath Supa Sumo
    5. Singlecut Weird & Gilly
    6. De Borgo ImperiAle Balsamico
    7. Bruery White Chocolate
    8. Finback IPA
    9. Tired Hands Space Canoe with Hibiscus (On Cask)
    10. Alchemist Crusher
    11. Toppling Goliath Fire Skulls and Money
    12. BCB Northwoods
    13. Southern Prohibition Hex Clouds

Would love to see your stats folks.

    Cheers!

If I knew how much I spent on beer last year, I would probably throw myself off a tall building. Or at least go to great lengths to hide it from my wife.

Interesting. I actually do this but not the $ figure. BA needs a track the beers you have drank.

I reviewed all 251 new-to-me beers that I had in 2017, and I went from about 52 styles reviewed to 100 in my push to try all 104. I spent exactly "to damn much" and my cellar swelled because I got into drinking new but still kept adding to my cellar. I now have enough beer in my cellar to survive the zombie apocalypse, presuming BA stouts keep them at bay.

548 new beers tried and rated. Dang, that’s 1.5 new beers per DAY.

I don’t have a problem. YOU have a problem. I can quit whenever I want...

I just copy my BA data into a spreadsheet, so I don't have access to a whole bunch of stats. I logged 275 new beers in 2017. I also made it to 104 styles, the final three of which cost about $66:

English Pale Mild - Hoof Hearted Belloq ($16, growler & fill)
English Dark Mild - Jester King Commercial Suicide ($16/750)
    Roggenbuer - Rogue Roguenbier ($8.99 bomber, $25 S&H)

I don't even want to know how much I spent beyond that.

My highest-rated beers of 2017 were Zombie Dust, TG Xhops Gold, MBC MO, Odell Rupture, and DKML. Lowest was Lazy Mutt Farmhouse (sic) Ale, from Minhas Craft (sic) Brewery.

Congratulations! Stand ready to have a NEIPA if you haven't yet, it will apparently be #105.

Congrats. What's next on the bucket list that is beer related? It would be hard to top that one.

If they don't reclassify something I've already had, then screw it.

OP, that's a nice compilation of beer stats. I keep a series of notepads with my beer ratings when I visit and review a new (to me) brewery. I had 110 new places in 2017 (12 were eateries/bars and the rest were breweries) and I typically drink a sampler flight (or two) at each one, so I'm guessing that I had an average of 5 beers at every place, or 550 beers. I recall giving a handful of 4.5 ratings, and maybe a 4.75 or two, but I'd have to look back through those note pads to see which beers they were. You'd think I could remember the notable beers, but the brain cells are slowly eroding and it's all a big fog nowadays.

A beer from each state. (Four to go: AR, ND, CT, RI.)
A beer from each Trappist brewery. (Four to go: Spencer, Tre Fontane, Westvleteren, Zundert.)

To be honest, I'm not putting much effort into these quests. Once I get my retirement ducks in a row, a beercation to New England will be the first order of business.

I came across XHops Gold multiple times while in Iowa but didn't buy it. Now reading what you said I regret it. Interestingly enough, I did buy Lazy Mutt Farmhouse while in Iowa, haha .

I log my beers in an excel sheet (I transfer handwritten notes if I don't have my laptop handy). It's a lot of fun and can track my beers easily.

I'm left with AR and WV to go. Just got a haul of ND beers so I ticked that state too. I'm shocked that you haven't had any CT or RI but then again I'm not sure how many make it to the Midwest. So many good beers from these two states. I had the opportunity to check all the Trappists too earlier this year (saw a Tre Fontane while in Vienna) but felt cheap and didn't buy it.

    My analysis contribution:
    ~350-400 new beers rated/reviewed in 2017
That is about exactly the same count as my stats show in 2016 and also 2015.

I think the difference over these 3 years, is a trending towards higher quality beers and higher cost beers. Bottom line: My beer budget/spending is increasing, quality of new beers I'm rating seems to be much higher overall as well.

    - Alot more $5 16oz can buying from top self-distributing beer makers, 2017 has been more beers sampled from on site brewery buying and trades from top brewers from around the county.
    - Years past, more random mixer sixers new beers from the store shelves and flights from new startup breweries.
2017 store beers are mostly repeat buys of beers I really liked from the past and a lot less new beer sampling.

That is a fantastic compilation @The_Kriek_Freak. I'm just the opposite and when I get too analytical in either evaluating, purchasing or funding, it becomes daunting. Then I just go drink a beer. My stats go something like this, 2 beers a day x 365 = 730 beers x $3 = too much $$. Happy New Years

I was just compiling a similar list. I don't have nearly the kind of details you have, but I did review 282 new beers this year. Considering my schedule, that's pretty good. If I keep up that pace (almost impossible given work), I'll crack 2000 in 2018 - but again, that's unlikely.

I've completed the quest to have a beer from every state, and I have the bottle/can displayed in my collection in my man cave. But my last beer-related bucket list item is to drink a beer in each state. I have CT, RI, NJ, KS, AK and HI to finish up. I've been to each of these states in the past (except for AK and RI), and I'm certain I've had a beer while there, but I did that before I got into craft beer and made it a 'hobby' so those visits are not documented. I hope to tick off Alaska this year.
