By the look at this thread, words have no meaning. The term whale means absolutely nothing.

I'm sure it's been posted already but I feel like bumping my BA post count to say that the beer you're referring to is pretty much the exact opposite of a "whale" beer.

    1. Westvleteren 12 - Decent but Rochefort 8 and 10 are better and the best quads I've had.
    2. Dark Lord (2013)
    3. KBS (2014) - but is this actually a 'whale' these days?
    4. Heady Topper
By no means are any of these 'bad' beers, but as whales they didn't do it for me.

To the comments about Pliny... I think it's an amazingly well balanced all around beer. I think those who don't like it are IPA-focused beer drinkers that probably like Heady Topper better, and would find Pliny too malty and sweet. Since I am not IPA-crazed, I find it's malt/hops balance to be perfect.

+1 Dark Lord. What a sweet, sticky mess in the years I've tried.

Logsdon Peche n Brett was a massive letdown, especially since the base beer rocks. Not a huge whale, but hard to get in the Midwest without over-trading.

The "meh" reviews for Cantillon Blabaer on here scare me since I just traded my left arm for an '09. At least, what I traded is a bunch of stuff I've had before.

KBS is listed here multiple times. A lot of people sit on this one too long - myself included in the past couple years. I find it to be a completely different beer after 6 months, with the great coffee flavors completely faded.

What is a whale to some may not be a whale to others.

I think a minimum requirement to be considered a whale is that you can't just walk into a liquor store and get one whenever you want, though.

Then let's just completely stop using this term.

the term whale being used in this thread was defined in the original post. all the people whining about the proper use of the word are just being pedantic. at least most people who have posted have used the original post's context  white whale....something that you spend a great deal of time or effort trying to get.

I read the first page. Before I go any further, does anyone actually post "whales" or even whale-like beers? :grinning:

Yo bro if you don't slay whales, then dont use the term. Whale is not a term that can be defined by the OP - the OP mis-defined it. Whale (in the beer community) has been a term long before January 31, 2014.

Dark Lord, even let it age 2 years because I heard it can be sweet. But man it was still like liquid sugar and gross. Whoever got that bottle of Darkness from me got a deal.
