The biggest one for me personally was Cantillon Blåbær. Had a bottle next to fou and rose, and blåbær didn't stand up to either...

I had PtE for the first time this summer fresh at the brewery, and didn't get the hype. While it's an excellent beer and wouldn't turn one down, I didn't think it was the most impressive IPA. Same with KBS, Sucaba, and Ten Fidy. I've found about half the big hype beers I've tried deserve the credit they get.

Didn't get Sucaba the first or second time I had it... but on the third try, I realized it is the equivalent of liquid crack, and deserving of the reputation.

I have to agree with you in that Dark Lord hasn't been overwhelming. It certainly is a great beer, but hasn't delivered on the ballyhoo.

Well, considering the only remotely close to "whale" status beers I've had are Rare and BBVBDL, I can't say much, because they were both amazing.

How many BA's who use the term "whale" when referring to rare beers use the same term when referring to + size women?

One mans whale is another mans herring. It's subjective IMO

Poor Hopslam. It's a mass-produced DIPA and doesn't even really deserve "whale" status. Treat it like any other DIPA.

KBS is my most disappointing hard-to-get beer. The Bruery Sucre is the most disappointing beer that I've spent a lot of money on.

On the plus side, I got a "whale" Speedway Stout recently and thought it lived up to the hype. I loved it.

I love these kinds of posts.

The definition of whales is 100% subjective. To you these aren't whales, that is great you have been around the block a bit. To others who may be new to the craft scene, may not want to trade, or have the means to trade, or live far away from a certain beer this type of limited beer is a whale to them. When you first started out I'll bet you hunted down beers that you now don't even worry about. All perspective.

Same thing as the term "rich." If someone is a millionaire rich likely means billionaire, but to the vast majority of people that millionaire looks rich.

Just because you don't believe it is a whale to you, doesn't mean it is a whale to somebody. Don't make this discussion about yourself. You could just move along. This post adds nothing other than a veiled humblebrag.

Isn't everything in life "subjective"? Doesn't mean something cannot be more clearly defined.

And by the looks of it I was not the only person who made the same statement about PTE and Dark Lord not being a Whale so let's dial back the sass a little bit eh?

    Cheers.

A lot in life is subjective, but not everything. The title of the thread is "Your Epic Whale Fail." All I'm saying is that whales can be different for different people, and in fact the thread is specifically speaking to what that individual's epic whale fail is, not what your epic whale fail is, or mine, but that individual's whale.

As for the sass, your initial post was quite sassy don't you think? That you can't be bothered to read along because you have a higher definition of whales than others?

There were also plenty of people who said their whale was Pliny or Dark Lord which to them it is. Actually I've never had Dark Lord myself, and for now at this moment it is a whale (aka one of my top wants right now) I haven't landed.

While I did pick out your post, my first comment clearly said "these kinds of posts" which infers that I was talking about all posts that were like that and not just your post. And just because other people jumped in to state that the beers were not whales, doesn't mean it is the best approach, or adds to the discussion.

Not sure what your post adds to the discussion. Why don't you tell us your epic whale fail?

    Here's mine:

While not a whale to some of the BA community, I was out in VT in search for Heady on one of my first beercations. I went from store to store, having trouble finding it. The next morning after getting some hunting tips from a couple of locals at the bar I went and found some Heady, but left a couple of plain white labelled beers sitting there on the shelves. Yep it was Lawon's. Still kick myself for passing on that, and while I've had my share of Lawson's since then I still haven't tried the Fayston Maple Imp Stout.
