KBS. Although I didn't have exactly over-the-top expectations, it was good but not great.

Were you expecting the greatest stout ever?

No surprises here. I always expect to be disappointed by those whales.

Oh wait, I thought this was a discussion about what whales blew our fucking minds and outperformed by far hype and expectations. Never mind.

On topic, gotta be Dark Lord, which I have tried numerous times, and despite lowering my expectations along the way, left me consistently disappointed and shaking my head how anyone could consider it a great beer, or even a good beer.

Because 99.9% of actual whales live up to the hype and expectations, except those left on list due to once being great and now just being super rare, and 99.9% of BA's have not tried any real whales.

Hunapuh. Tasted the potential, but had green pepper and brine taste to it.

I would not say 99.9% of whales live up to the hype.

Goose Island Rare BCS was far below the expectation, and for the cost, an exceptional fail.

Of DIPA's, I like Abrasive the most, more forward at the start then HT or PtE. I expected alot more from HT, esp after several attempts to get some. BTW, thx again to the trader. At this point I only want more Abrasive.

I guess it's like the after C-mas let down....months and months of anticipation and then, a good version of the style but not a revelation

I would say more than .1% of BAs have had an actual "whale", if we are going off that list that someone posted. I have had in the neighborhood of 40 from that list and not all were awesome, or even good.

Hopslam for me. Our store bought 75 cases, and it was gone in under two hours. It just goes to show what hype can do though. We get questions year round though from people new to craft beer asking for all the big beers that are either out of state or the wrong time of year. People ask if we have Pliny or Heady Topper just about every other day, and they still look at me like it's my fault we can't get it here.

Well, to me they were very similar. I admit I never did a side by side, which gives me an idea, although I don't think I'll pay for Utopias ever again. I could throw DuClaw Colossus into the mix as well.

They all have a very sweet up front malty, fruity flavor, with that nice alcohol warmth throughout that lingers.

Here's for an opposite of the whale phenomenon. A beer I didn't have high hopes for but blew me away: Firestone Sucaba. I had the 2010, which likely makes a difference. But I'll be looking for this one again.
