Since when did Rogue make whales?

It's funny how so many of the beers mentioned aren't even whales.
Do you even trade bro!? :sunglasses:

Not necessarily whales normally but since I had to seek them out of my distribution area, both Terrapin Wake and Bake and Hopping Frog BORIS the Crusher were disappointments to me. Ashy and out of balance coffee /bitter from my recollection on each of those.

I tried 3-4 Prairie Artisans (including Prarie Bomb) and all were solid beers but none were in that world class area. I thought the way this brewer was hyped on here, that they would be on par with HF, not even in the same league as a brewer IMO.

BLACK Butte. It tasted like many other decent porters, nothing special.

To me Jai Alai is always great. Of course, my shop typically gets cold cases that are less than a week old. On four occasions we've received cases that were canned the day before! Consistently fantastic.

I've never had a Whale, some brewery one offs and such, but never a true whale.

Definitely KBS. I would never go great lengths to go to a release party unless you've had the beer before and know you love it. Sets you up for massive disappointment.

I'd be glad to tip my cap and send you on your way, but you've got DFH 90 Minute rated at 4.75, and that thing is malty as heck for a DIPA and not especially citrusy to boot. If those were the reasons you didn't like Pliny, I can't fathom why you would think so highly of 90-Minute.

By all means, skip the Pliny, though. 90-Minute is way easier to get anyway.

Really? Which ones have you had in their prime, that were in a style you enjoy, you thought were not good?

Don't know that I've had any epic fails -- that's a bit strong -- but I can name a bunch that didn't blow me away like I thought they might. (And using the term whale loosely...)

-Jai Alai was, indeed, too sweet, and you can go ahead and throw DirtWolf in there too. I just don't tend to get into the juice-bomb sort of IPAs/DIPAs that seem to be the thing these days. (With a few exceptions, like Sucks).

-Cherry Rye convinced me that dark fruit-forward stouts just aren't my thing.

-While we're at it, BCBCS @ #2 currently on the Top 250? Not for me. Tasty enough, but flavors always felt like they were a bit at war, never settling into a happy equilibrium.

-KBS was enjoyable but certainly not Top 10 stuff for me. Weak on the coffee, weak on the barrel, weak on the body...again, not unpleasant, but not mind-blowing.

-Framboise de Amorosa was good but not great, the raspberry proving unable to really carry through beyond the initial taste.

-On the Wings of Armageddon was kinda like Sculpin - snappy hops, but not necessarily a ton of actual hop flavor, just that vague bitterness and bite. Wouldn't bother with it again.

-FBS/Wake n' Bake are both nice, but Peche Mortel beats 'em up pretty good.

-Still haven't had anything from Societe that has knocked my socks off, including, most recently, The Pupil.

There, that oughtta be a wide enough net to have ruffled a few feathers:slight_smile:

Haven't cracked it yet, but I'm pretty sure it's going to be MBCP.

I'd bet my last dollar you were in the extreme minority opinion on all of those, if tasted in their primes, which was my point.

I wasn't in the minority during the tasings in regard to Dave and Black Tuesday. I think most liked the two Bullfrog beers, but not sure.

I picked one up out of curiosity when it was first released, unaware of its hype factor and time spent in former PVW barrels. It was WAY too boozy for my liking, and just didn't tickle my barleywine fancy.

I ended up using it as dunking liquid for a perfectly stale package of marshmallow Peeps I was aging.

For me Bell's Black Note (at a reasonable price) is a whale. While I could get it, I refuse to pay $25 per bottle.
